K usually indicates an indicator light or switch, 31 is always ground. Of course a look at the wiring diagram in the manual wouldn't hurt: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1977eberspacher_ba6_repair_manual.php

http://www.type2.com/dakhlia/wiring_diagrams.html

Here are some wiring diagrams. Not sure if you have seen them. It looks like the 'K' wire is used. I don't see a '31' on there. Terminal 31 is the ground circuit on German cars. Can you tell by looking at the terminal if there is any wear or signs of it not being used?

I found some black & white wiring diagrams that are pretty hard to figure out.

In order to run it on the bench you really need to pull out the wiring harness. There is a safety switch and a triple relay under the dash and the harness plugs into them. Also 2 wires go to #9 and #10 in the fuse box and 1 wire goes to the switch on the heater lever that turns on the fan. If you pull off those wires and pull out the relay and the safety switch the harness is all self contained and is fairly easy to get out of the bus. I have taken 4 of them out in about 1 hour at a junkyard. It's just held on with zip ties under the bus. Don't try wiring it up yourself, that's not really a good idea. Also having the wiring harness out makes it easy to inspect the wires and see if any are shorting (yes I have had them not run because of that). PM me if you need any help, I have rebuilt a few of these and their smaller brother the BA4.

Well, i pulled the harness out along with all the relays & switches. Came out a lot easier then i would have thought. The wiring all seems to be in great shape. Now i'm wondering a few things about what kind of ground wires to run & where? Most of it is all hooked up ready to run now.

This part of the switch only had 1 wire going to it, and it was brown (ground). Been trying to look at some diagrams to find out if the wire was going to the 'K' or the '31' on this switch

Another thing I noticed: is your intake hose cracked in the picture below?

If it is replace it. The intake should be very far away from the heater, otherwise drafts could potentially cause the heater to overheat and catch fire.

Did you forget where oregon is ? like west coast.

That big ol ocean out here is not fresh water. What we don't have is salted hyways. it freeze's or snows we're just SOL. The plus here is the rusted cars of any brand, come off the coast. There's a large mountain range within a mile of the ocean, which blocks the salt air.

so 10 miles inland and your out of the cancer zone.. but the rain .. these buses here just like you, when they sit the windshield, floors rain gutters so on get rusted out just like any where else

I love you guys out in Oregon....you just happen across an old bus that looks like it has been in a ditch for 20 years, pull it out and with some elbow grease find the original paint under the wheel arches to be far better than my bus has ever looked. You have no idea (or maybe you do) what it is like to live on the east coast where rust eats these things alive.

Will someone please keep an eye out for me for a 78-79 deluxe westy out there? It can be ratty, no engine, no trans, no interior...just a clean, rust free body and beam. I'll toss in a finders fee too. Wink

Great bus and good luck!

Then i hammered out a the little dent in the side from under the back seat & tatted it up with some of that paint too. Not a perfect match but it'll work until i get some paint mixed up if i ever fix the nose up all nice.

Decided to replace all these crispy old vacuum lines & in the process found a big leak in the tube going to the aux. air valve. The tube was like what i use on my fish pond pump & was barely zip tied on there.

Yeah, the bus is coming right along. My friend gets all the credit for the pans, he paints for a living & i'm known to leave runs in my paint Laughing I think he used epoxy primer & clear. They do look pretty sweet though huh!

As for the BA6 i haven't done much. I pulled off the exhaust pipe from it & a buncha rust came out. Also found a tear in the rubber boot thingy right where the wires are sticking out of it. You can see in the right side of this pic

I think i'm going to just pop the whole thing out of there and try to make it run on the bench.

Just checked out this thread for the first time today; awesome bus and great pictures! Looks like your restoration is going really well; your attention to detail while cleaning and painting is admirable. Keep on keeping on, and nice work! Smile

Tore the engine down a bit so i could replace the oil cooler seals & weld up the exhaust pipes (hacked out the CAT). I ended up putting it all back together minus the AC for now, but she sounds much better & doesn't leak oil anymore Very Happy
