Non-cracked wheel may be a hard item to find as these tend to crack by aging and most (all?) of them are 40 or more years old by now.

Fortunately these were originally painted so fill the cracks with epoxy, grind to smooth and paint.

Finding correct paint is another problem, any ideas?

Is it just ordinary car paint?

Mine has paint worn out from the bottom side (as seen from the seat) and new paint would be useful.

Koch used to have an,excellent kit and a video tutorial for repairing and painting your own wheel. Some of the mags did write ups years back. It can look like factory. Ray

So are you just looking for a stock wheel in better condition..... classifieds should get you there......or are you lookkng for something. ...pristine?

Again....you should call Koch. They can refurbish or totally recast your wheel. Superb work. Like factory. And that would depend on what your budget is. Ray

The responses on this topic seem to be all over the place. Since I'm not planning to epoxy my steering wheel on my 1973 412, i need a newer one.

From what I surmise a VW beetle 4 spoke wheel will fit. However, I cant get a clear answer as to what year Vw beetle steering wheel to use.

Any clarification would be grand. Thanks!

I tried to fit the padded '74 sun bug wheel on my '74 412 last weekend. nope, no go. It (the 412) has the smaller splines from '73 down and the nut is the 24mm, not the larger 26mm.

One thing interesting to note, is as I recall, the '74 412 did NOT get the steering wheel spline change other aircooled VWs got that model year, which I believe are the same as the early watercooled. I also think there are some Porsche steering wheels that will fit as well.

Will the SB fit a 71 411? I noticed there was no reference to the 71 411 which has a different 3 spoke steering wheel

Thanks Lars for helping. At least we can confirm one thing - The 1973 SB steering wheel will work on the 411/412.

I'll try to do some research on other steering wheels as well. As mentioned earlier, I think the splines are different on the '73 SB.

If it isn't too much trouble, I would appreciate it Lars. Thanks for offering. At least now we will be able to add this to 'parts compatible with other VW's'.

I like the steering wheel with the white Wolfsburg crest. I think it will look sharp in my 412!

Cant find any marking on the metal parts, only some date marking on the bottom plastic section, my original VW412 1973 steering wheel says "23 11 72" the super beetle one says "6? 11 73".
Also the super beetle steering wheel has the four Audi rings (OOOO) at the base at the big fitting nut, my original dont. Guess the Super beetle wheel is newer then the original one.
Anyhow they both seem to be identical when it comes to how they fit.

Lars, So a 1974 SB will fit the 412? If so, that is great news. Someone told me that the 1973-only SB had different splines, so I guess that year is out.

So now I'm on the hunt for a 1974+ SB steering wheel for my 412!

Well Im not sure on what year my SB steering wheel is from...I can look for part no on it if you want me to?

That would be superbeetle in general. My bet is yes. I have gotten junkyard wiper and washer lever assemblies from supers and they drop right in. Ray

My ultimate preference would be to use the more 'snazzy' VW bug wheel, identical to the photo on the top of this thread. Not sure if they are interchangeable or not??

Also I meant to note....that 1972 snd 1973 type 3 use the same wheel as 72 and on type 4. Ray
