Yes. A milling machine to accurately drill out the old threads and the bore to the correct size to tap and install a thread insert. Wink

Nope, not a drain but a post for one side of the rocker spring to secure to. If you look at the backside of the pump mounting flange, it has an indention at the lower side. So, when the pump is bolted up, there is a small gap between the gaskets where fuel could drain out there if the diaphargms failed and leaked gas to the bottom of the pump.

So is it supposed to be a drain (as I've heard it referred to) or just a way to remove the spring? I was going through my stash of cores to rebuild a pump for my deluxe, and found this one.

The 25HP pumps and the 1954 36hp pump had the screw/plug that had a stud on it that the rocker spring slid onto. The other side of the spring was held against the rocker. In 1955, the lower casting was the same but not drilled out or threaded, that post or stud was built into the casting that the spring sat against from then on out.

Could this "flat top" fuel pump be from a Porsche? I got it from a box of parts from my dad, who had a 1958 Porsche engine.
'

That is a 356 fuel pump and adapter, 8mm inlet like the early VW was used on Porsche thruout production.. I believe yours is from an early 3pc case, 1955 thru whenever the newer pump was introduced. The earlier 2pc case used the same pump but the 3pc. case required the adapter you've pictured.

I wonder if that adapter fitting is a thread insert. Some inserts have thick shoulders on them. I see lots of these 25/36hp pumps with damaged threads from cross threading the screw in fuel lines.

I just rebuilt three 36HP pumps for a customer and took some photo's for reference. One is the late 1958 version with the tall neck on the outlet. I do see a lot of these tall new 1958 pumps as well.
The 1956 pumps have the identical base to the 1958 pump as the rounded hump for the screw in rocker holder/plug at the base of the lower section of the pump was gone.

Not at all hard to believe. There are some distributor versions that were in production for less than a month.

It doesn't seem to weird given that they changed the entire style by adding a filter.

Maybe Hans had been arguing for the filter add for years and finally got it approved. Smile

Great thread and timely too as I'm getting ready to rebuild a coupe of fuel pumps.

Where can I find the correct screws for the top plate?

I'm trying to guess when they changed from the 36hp shorter outlet spout to the taller one (before the addition of the extra filter screen) I came across a beautiful July 57 which has an all original engine. It had the taller outlet fuel pump with case date 20-6-27, and Fuel pump 3181447. Another friend has a long spout version with serial number 3156534 which is 24,913 earlier. It looks like they were making about 16,000 beetles a month, (plus busses) so I'd estimate these taller neck fuel pumps were at least on June 57 beetles, maybe up to December 1958.

On my Nov 1 built zwitter, which seemed to have all the correct original engine parts, I restored the fuel pump with serial number 764520.

Is this a real 1955 or there abouts 356 fuel pump?

Some good information on the early 356 fuel pumps and the 36hp pumps in general.
