Scott made it to his excellent mechanic south of the border. A lot of good work was done there, and you can bet lash, CR and other issues were checked. See Scott's other thread:

I guess I saw this late-but as soon as it did I thought of ConsVW-and by the photo I could tell you found it.

I lived in Roseburg tell I was 12 always looking for VW's but to young to drive. I moved away at 12 and got my first VW at 20 up in Albany Or. As soon as I did so I was back in Roseburg visiting and my father said when he had a '71 Bus he use to go to ConsVw. I stopped by there really just to chat and found some small parts-Nice people.

Happy Holidays and have a nice trip.

Here's an update for everyone...

Scott stopped in Palm Springs for a couple days on his way to Mexico, with an engine sounding somewhere between a coffee grinder and a machine gun. When he left here, he stopped off at a VW friend's place for a few days to get heads rebuilt, electrical sorted out, exhaust leaks fixed and a bunch of other things. And as of this afternoon, Danté is purring along, carrying Scott down to Baja and points south. Happy trails, Wanderglobe!

Scott is planning on making it back up for Buses By the Bridge in January. Dancing

They were still flinging good food last time I was in there but it's been a few years -- 2015, on my way to Mess, AZ to bury my aunt. Still, odds are good they're still doing good greasy-spoon breakfast in 2018...

I met up with Scott just south of Chowchilla. Great guy! Seems like the bus is doing fine. No need to check up on anything at that point, and I finally got to see what PDSIT dual carbs look like in their installed and working environment.

Installed and working? Slow down now. Haha

If you aren't in a huge hurry to hit the highway in the morning, I recommend the deep pit beef omelette at Milt's Coffee Shop on Knudsen. That place has been a "must stop" for me in Bakersfield since I was a kid, along with the Pyrenees Cafe on Sumner and Dewar's Candy on California Ave.

Yes, part of my family is from Bakersfield .. how could you tell? Laughing

You know, if I wasn't one of those left wing, pinko commie, freedom hating vegetarians I probably would try one. But I may pop in for breakfast nonetheless. Never in a hurry. If I was I wouldn't be driving a 45 year old bus.

Cross your collective fingers....
Wanderglobe is on his way to Palm Springs!

His bus is pretty tough, so I'm sure he'll make it.
And he has a VW buddy south of here that can help him sort everything out.

If you have valves that are tightening up on you at a high rate then you have something wrong that you need to fix before you blow your engine up. You could have a seat or two that are loose and ready to drop or you could have head bolts or rocker arm bolts that are pulling. I would suggest spending some time with Aeromech or someone else before crossing the border.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try to hook up with somebody today to take a look at it. Smile

Thanks. I usually head that way but I'm just outside of Sacramento this morning and rolling down the I5 so I don't think I'll be passing through SF.

I-5 is pretty boring, but that's cool. 101 is just about as fast and a lot prettier.

If you have any troubles today, reach out. I am way over by Fresno, and am going to drive up to the Bay Area this afternoon via Fresno/Los Banos/Tracy.

I'll send a PM.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance and suggestions. I was almost going to head over to Autotech, a shop that deals in imports but mostly newer ones, when I got a response from consvws. D/A/N suggested calling him so I did and they got back to me before the tow truck arrived. Big bonus because the shop I was going to closed at noon for the weekend and I might have been stuck in Roseburg until Monday. (cute town by the way)

Anyway, Conrad and the old man got to looking at the bus and within about 15 minutes found that the valves needed major adjustments. Once that was done the bus turned over. They sorted out a few other loose ends and I was on my way before noon. Highly recommend these guys if you're ever in the area.
