Always like hearing from the Cape, so many warm memories with the kids on the water, on the tidal flats at Barnstable, Menemsha, Cuttyhunk, Woods Hole.

Not a whole lot to update on.

It seems like the new rubber boots/seals I installed in 2020 on the motor only last about 4 years. Had to replace the oil dip stick boot, brake booster to intake boot, and alternator cooling boot. The alternator cooling boot was actually shredded up in a couple different places. All these new boots seemed to lower the idle RPMs a little bit, so I guess I had a vacuum leak.

Moral of the story here, don’t think those rubber boots and seals in the engine compartment last forever, they just don’t make them like they used too. Guess they should be replaced every 3-4 years.

Will be at transporterfest on Sunday if anyone else is headed up that way.

You would have loved the cape in the 70s! There were SO many VWs you'd loose count in 5 minutes. Back when it was allowed we'd see a stream of Bajas on our beach in Truro...

This year it was down to one yellow bus near Wellfleet, and my son claimed to see a brown Vanagon....

Great to see you enjoying the Bus! I'll be down the Cape in a few weeks. (Lobster Pot in Ptown FTW!) The amount of VWs we used to see back in the 70s and 80s was amazing... not so much now. Next year my 77 will be back on the road and heading out for a visit. Oh... and you're lucky you can register in D.C. That would never pass Mass yearly inspection. They're sticklers with rust!

It’s been a great year in the bus. Me and kiddo have been logging some miles. Have about 5k on rebuild and everything seems to be going well.

In February I had to drive back to DC for inspection, did the 950 mile blast, passed inspection and drove back to the cape. It was 50 degrees on the drive down and then 15 degrees on the drive back to Cape Cod.

A couple weeks ago the kiddo and I camped in the back yard for our first camp out. We made it all night, watched tv, ate s’mores, and our set up was killer. We might try camping at Nickerson next year.

It’s nice to see photos of the Cape! We’re heading down for our yearly vacation. We’re staying in Wellfleet this year and I’m hoping for us to take our 68 bay!

Glad to see the Bus back in its home. Very Happy

Cobies rules. Fish sammy and a black and white shake. We take our bikes from Hport and ride up the rail trail.

Good catch on the pad. Could you not just bevel the edge with a file and put it back in place?

Well… on the hottest weekend of the spring I drove the bus from DC to the Cape. Went off without a hitch. Was super slow going. Only have 500 miles on the motor and didn’t want to push it too hard. Kept it at 60mph the whole time and boy does it take a long time to get to the Cape at 60mph.

This morning I took the bus to the hardware store and felt a pop, almost like the transmission popping out of gear… it also felt like I had dragging a ton of bricks. Hopped out at the hardware store and could smell brakes. Passenger rear wheel was sizzling hot to the touch. Drove it the 5min back to the house and took the drum off.

Not sure how the shoe came out of the cylinder… never seen that before.
Glad this happened 5min down the road and not in the middle of Pennsylvania, NY thru-way, or Connecticut. Got brake shoes on order. This could have been way worse. Glad it happens close to home base.

Had a few extra minutes to use the orbital buffer to clean up the bus today.

Looks much better... All that cape cod dust is gone now.

Finished the pop top today. Anyone out there wondering if you can do it with the top on? Yes… I’m not sure if it would have been faster to remove top or not. Reattaching the metal strips to the body is by far the worst and hardest part of the job. On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is easy and 10 is hard, this job would be about a 5. There’s easy and tough parts. Time consuming to do on your own. If you had a helper you could probably knock it out in one day.

Almost there with the new pop top canvas. Doing it myself so left the top on during install. The lady I bought the bus from included the canvas with the sale. It’s a BD canvas from 10-15 years ago. The windows don’t seem to be in the best locations but I’ll take a free canvas any day of the week. Good practice for if I have to do it again.

Used the rustoleum top side marina paint from the local hardware store. Good enough for me! Will do new seals next weekend.

For Father’s Day I asked for some time to work on the bus and my request was granted. When I purchased the bus, the lady threw in all new pop top seals and canvas. So I spent about 5hrs this weekend cleaning, painting, and refreshing the pop top. Used the rustoleum marine paint. Looks great so far. Will use the next few weekends to do the back part of the pop top.

Don’t have garage in the street so it looks like I’ll be leaving the top on for the canvas install. I’ll chip away at it slowly when the kiddo and mom dont need me.
