I'm curious as to what the "old-time" VW people have to say about oil in VW'.
A mechanic I used to go to when I lived in Idaho swore by Valvoline 15-40 Heavy Duty oil. The temperature swings in the state possibly warranted a multi viscosity oil... but do VW engines "like" multigrade oils, or a straight single weight oil?
I see in the manual (mine is a 1973) that the oil recommendations for the listed temperature ranges are for single weight oils. Living in Florida, I should be running a 40 weight this time of year, according to the chart.
Is there a difference between multigrade and single grade oils in how they work in an air-cooled engine? Is there a difference between the two kinds of oils; does one handle temperatures better than the other and not degrade as quickly?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts... |
