Great info but please, please double and triple check the terms and conditions that the different insurers classify classic insurance as in regards to the type of driving, when and what time you can drive the car and where the towing allows the car to be towed to.
There is a huge price and policy difference between what my State Farm insurance considers as a daily driver, occasional driver, weekend driver and classic insurance.
Make sure when price shopping that you are comparing apples to apples types of coverage as well as insurance categories. |
I totally agree.
In my case, the newer convertible is understood to be used only for occasional pleasure driving (in the range of 3,000 miles/year) and it will be kept in a locked storage unit. |

FWIW, my State Farm policy covers my classic cars/bikes for the declared value with better medical, uninsured motorist and property damage coverage than Hagerty, for the same amount of money. YMMV. |
"Declared" value sounds a lot like "Stated Value." That means the carrier pays whatever their reference values state - usually FAR below market value. Large carriers very well may insure your car, but not the same way a specialty carrier like Hagerty, Grundy, or American Collectors does. You may be VERY disappointed in case of a total loss. Read your policy carefully.
By contrast, Agreed Value means that the value that the customer wants to insure the car for will be the amount of the check the carrier writes in a total loss (minus any deductible.) Big difference _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

You should. Collector car insurance agreed values consider not only the value of the vehicle itself, but also the cost of finding an suitable comparable replacement, plus the cost of transportation. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

UPDATE:
I just got a pleasant surprise. Typically, collector insurance is for cars at least 25 years old, but on a whim, I checked Hagerty for our 2008 VW EOS. Lo and behold, they consider it to be collectible because of Turbo and low mileage/ limited sunny-day use. They added the EOS to my '66 Beetle policy. (while I was at it, we increased the Beetle to $20,000 agreed value), $8,000 value on the EOS. Zero deductible collision and comp on both cars. Total premium= $396/year.
Jake from State Farm wants twice that for the EOS alone. |

American Collectors are also quite good but just not advertised so not as well known. I got a price quote from Hagerty for my 61 bug and 77 MG Midget and American Collectors was much cheaper for the same coverage. _________________ 1961 Bug, 2276 cb wedge ports 44x37 11.1 comp fk10 1.5 rockers 48idf's 1 3/4" header Rancho pro street trans SAW axles Airkewld 4# narrowed beam, Koni shocks, Airkewld dis brake all around. 5.5/4.5 BRMs

I have Hagerty on my 68 Turbo Bug. Only pay $200 / year with unlimited towing, which I've already used once. All of my peers with classic cars also use Hagerty. I couldn't recommend them enough!

I just switched from Progressive with only liability to Hagerty with comprehensive coverage and an agreed upon value for my ‘67 that totally covers me in the event of a total loss or theft to find a comparable car at above market price to replace mine. Very, very surprised at the price difference! Half of what I was paying Progressive with only liability. _________________ 67 Type 1

I checked Hagarty on Yelp.com and there are a lot of bad reviews from people who have made a claim. Maybe those people didn’t understand the policy? Is American Collectors Insurance good? Seems they have better reviews. Looks like a lot of members here have Hagarty though. |
Unfortunately there are those that can break a crow bar in a sand box, so hearing both sides of the story of the bad reviews would be interesting. From a repair shop point of view, Hagerty, and Grundy were among the few that simply said fix it, and send us the bill. Hagerty is a little more strict when it comes to storing your vehicle when not in use, and intended use. I don’t have any first hand experience with American Collectors. The main thing is to get an agreed value with a collectible type insurance. Mainstream companies will never pay the hourly repair rate of a shop willing to do a high end classic repair, undervalue your vehicle for the payout, only to then make money off the salvage auction sale for parts.
Also look into what happens to your vehicle if it gets totaled. Mainstream insurance in PA takes your vehicle, and if you want it back, you have to have the winning bid at the salvage auction. Most collector vehicle insurance companies can write up a policy clause that allows you to “buy back” your totaled vehicle for 10%-20% of the totaled amount. This needs to be brought up at the creation of the policy. |

Look up the values using NADA and using documentation and receipts or get an appraisal if necessary.
Do not underinsure! |
Also make sure you are using an AGREED value, not stated. This is the amount that you WILL receive in a total loss. If you can get the provider to agree to a higher amount, within reason, do not under insure your vehicles. |
