unfortunately, there will probably be more value as scrap steel for most of it.

This hobby just isn't thriving on late model (post '67) needs.

I'll admit, I'm guilty of a bit of hoarding and accumulating quite a bit over last 30yrs, but I've also filled many 40yd dumpsters and disposed of non-moving stuff.

Soon, I'll be doing a final sell-off as well, but more than likely I'll be filling a few more dumpsters, as few people are willing to travel to buy in bulk.

This guy was 60 years old, diagnosed with terminal throat cancer and he died. This may have been his retirement fund and didn't get to use it. Let that be a lesson to everyone. Be realistic about how much shit you can get rid of in a given amount of time.

I know several of these junkyard selloffs are because the land has become much more valuable then the salvage business selling junk parts. I remember a thread a few years ago where the owner was forced to sell everything or scrap it all because the state took over his land thru eminent domain.

Im an unfortunate victim of this kind of shit. A very good friend, albeit 85 years old, has a farm of airplanes, vw’s, and motorcycles down in Georgia. When I say farm of them, I mean 3 complete airplanes, 5 more in pieces, dozen splitties, squarebacks, bugs, transporters, type 3, type 4, harleys, indians, etc, etc, etc...

He will take em all to the grave. He spent a lifetime finding and carrying them to his farm for free, and wouldnt think about selling a single thing. Even to an old friend of 30 years like me.

The worst part of this is, that when he dies some day, most of his stuff will go to the church or some rich guy that wants to buy a country grass airstrip, and could care less about hundreds of thousands of dollars in classic cars. Hell, if you can afford an airstrip, who cares about 50 old rusty vw’s taking up space in the trees?

I love the guy to death, as he is the niceset man ive ever met, but even my stubborn Irish ass aint so tight.

I can only enjoy the times we share walking through the woods, and him having a story of every piece he carried there over the last sixty years.

My advice to all, when you think your stuff is junk and you decide to part with it, maybe think again. Find a spot to rest it for a while. Maybe you get back to it, maybe you dont. But at least it will be there for you. There not making any new ones, are they?

I am glad the stuff is going back out into the hobby. Not that I am trying to take money out of anyone's pocket, but, at least it can be enjoyed by others and people aren't being taken advantage of either.

I was there yesterday and found what I needed after digging for a while. The pieces I found can be found here on the samba for over $100 each used. I got over $500 worth of parts for $50 for a little digging. That is worth it in my book. I asked the new owner about what was going to happen to the rest of the parts when the sale was over and he said he had several VW people coming in to make an offer on the rest. He said it was not going to scrap.

A lot of it is not really worth it and the cars have sat out so long the earth is reclaiming a good n umber of them, but you never know. One mans gathers what another man spills.

I don't know that he's a hero. He bought the land and is hoping to sell what he can to make some money back. I think we would all try to do the same thing. If I bought a warehouse full of yarn, I would probably try to sell it for a profit, but I wouldn't think the old knitting ladies would hold me up on a pedestal for doing it. It's business.
As has been said many times in this thread, there just aren't a lot of rare / valuable things there unfortunately. Yes, it would make me a bit sad to see the crusher come in and shred all of it, but a lot of that stuff you simply can't even give away these days. I've had 2 decent fan shrouds in my basement for a decade. I've taken them to local swap meets for 10 years. Listed for $5 each. I haven't even had someone glance at them twice. So selling off a pile of 50 would probably take a lifetime (or 2).
Are people showing up at that place to buy stuff? Sure. But are they getting any parts they couldn't find from 10 other VW guys in their town? I doubt it.
If this shop had piles of Hazet tool kits, NOS Barndoor stuff etc, then it would be a real treasure. But how long do you hang onto 100 Beetle fenders hoping to find the guy that needs the L-380 Turkis original paint one for $50?

Don't get me wrong- I would love to go wandering around there if it was close to home. That sounds like fun. And it looks like lots of other people are doing the same thing. But this stash isn't single-handedly saving the hobby or anything.

The sad part is you can get your $50 part if you get off your lazy behind, buy Or knock together some shelves, and put those piles or crap into manageable sellable piles. After I’ve ripped up my hands to find the nice fan shroud at the bottom of that pile, I only want to pay you scrap value too.

If you give me a pdf of where your 30 fan shrouds are m and I can see the one I want and pick it, I’ll pay a part value.
