I had longer bolts ready to go based on good Samba advice. But first I tried compressing the whole mess with a C-Clamp. Worked the clamp around and compressed in several places. To my surprise, the original bolts engaged the threads and tightened.
I did the above BEFORE bolting the spring plate to the diagonal arm. From your picture, looks like you have these two bolted together now. _________________ 1956 Beetle Ragtop: My Father's car

It is easier to first losely attach the cover plate withthe four bolts, then lift the spring onto the pad. |

If the rubber is dry, it may be fighting you. Spray those donuts down with some silicon lube or use silicon paste. Be generous with the paste! _________________ Jimbo

Alright I'll give it a shot then, I've already tried that with some "longer" (~2.5") bolts but it's worth another shot with something even longer. Thanks gents. |

X2 This is the way I install "spring plate" torsion covers. _________________ I have learned over the years.

I'm in the process of getting my '74 back to stock, which means bringing it back up to stock ride height. I adjusted the swing axel, but now I cant get the spring plate back on and lined up. Any tips/advice?
