There's a good thread on the 914 World, same subject.

Looks like a 175+ Amp alternator would be preferred along with the largest capacity battery you could fit?
Either way, 100amps isn't enough.
Watching this myself as I wouldn't mind installing Electric AC in my Bug. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

When I fitted electric AC to a T3 engine KG last year I fitted an on/off switch to the evaporator electrical feed which also powered a remote relay to allow the main power feed from the battery to energise the AC - like a hard start relay but much bigger!
Like you I fitted a 100amp alternator and upgraded the supply from it by running a heavier cable to the starter (which obviously feeds the battery). I also fitted a 60ah battery (upgraded 411/412 size) which just fits in the under rear seat area.
I did not like the thought of the main power feed from the battery to the AC inverter at the front of the car being live all the time as shown in the fitting instructions hence the switching solution.
Had no trouble with discharge from battery but as with an engine compressor on a carburettor engine, the load on the alternator does drop the idle speed, so I have fitted an idle stop solenoid triggered from the same main power relay. |

1,2 or 3 battery's it does not matter, if the alternator does not put out more then what is used then you will discharge the batters, and will cook the alternator trying to keep up. |

With 320A, you are going to melt the wire that goes to the battery to charge it before anything else. _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

Everything electrical in a car runs off the battery. The alternator is there to keep the battery charged. If your battery is dropping in voltage you need a larger capacity alternator.
WOSP is developing 120, 175, 250 & 320 amp alternators but aren’t available for sale yet.

I read somewhere of another ACVW owner installing a 2nd battery for use by an electric AC. I also thought that the biggest alternator available was 90 amps.
Can you provide a more detailed description of the system you installed and how everything is mounted and connected? Pictures would be nice too. _________________ "Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition

Hi guys, I recently installed an AC unit powered by an electric compressor.
I also put a 100 Amp alternator in that I ordered from the UK.
My question here is, why is the AC still drawing power from the battery?
do i need a bigger battery? positive terminal?
please send links if possible thanks! |
