After speaking with the rebuilder, I was told to run it for a few minutes to break it in. I put it in gear and hooked up the shifting linkage and started it and let it run on the lift. after a few minutes I was able to shift and get all gear with a terrible gate pattern. Tomorrow I'm going to adjust the shifter linkage and replace any worn bushings.

Back to the Builder if you can't even get those gears with no linkage attached... Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

I just swapped out my 4 speed on my 86 Vanagon , the original problem was no 3 gear or trouble getting into 3rd even with the linkage disconnected, shifting by hand. So I coughed up the dough and purchased a professionally built rebuild. with the van up on the lift the new one won't shift into 1st or 2nd even without the linkage attached, shifting by hand. I'm waiting for a call back from the builder.
Any Ideas????
