Uhh, yeahโฆ?
I painted my daily driver to look like a Schwinn a few thousand miles ago, I race too many alleycats to have rare/expensive bikes.

Wild prices for bikes that are a pain in the ass to ride.
I had a โ74 Stingray in middle school. Rode it to school and everything. Lost track of it when I went off to college, but my dad found it, bought it back, and cleaned it up for me last year. Probably one of the best gifts Iโve ever received.
Three years ago I picked up a โ73 Varsity to have some wheels at a festival. It grew on me, and I threw it on the roof rack for 12 states and 7,500 miles. An unkillable 40-pound machine guaranteed to build your fitness weather you like it or not.

There's six restored Krates for sale on BAT being sold separately by the seller.
Only one day left to bid.

| When I was a kid in El Cajon I had a 73-4ish red Schwinn with the slick tire & the banana seat, didn't have the really tall sissy bar...just the regular one. Some scumbag swiped it...never saw it again. |

Like I posted earlier, mine takes the regular 27 x 1.25 inch tires, available at least from Bell and Kenda. Even the Ace Hardware 400 yards from me has a pair of the Bell ones, at $20 each; I'll let my daughter order them online for me for Christmas.
One advantage to me of this Schwinn is that it is heavier duty than lightweight "distance" bikes; of course that means it weighs more so is tougher to push on longer rides...
It looks like this one, except I installed a wider padded seat and a longer/taller handlebar mount so I could sit more upright and not hurt my neck or my hands so much.

So I ride a Schwinn World Sport from about 1978/1979, a birthday present from my mom, rode it also on first date with current Mrs. Cusser, and we dragged the bikes to California again on vacation in August to ride up the beach near Hermosa Beach.
That Schwinn bike needs new tires now, uses 27 x 1.25 inch outer tires, the replacement ones have cracked badly, maybe my daughter will get me a pair for Christmas; inner tubes that size are easier to find in stores. |
I hope those tires are easier to find than mine, Schwinn used proprietary sizes. Just like vintage VWs though an aftermarket exists to serve us. I used a place in perrysburg Ohio called memory lane. They have a nice web page and they sell wide white walls for the vintage guys. |
not all of the Schwinn bikes used proprietary sizes. The world Sport uses a 27x1 1/4 tire which should be available in a quality tire at a real bike shop. We used to stock that size in Conti, Michelin, Vittoria and a cheap gumwall. |

| I always liked Schwinns as a kid. The smooth, lug less quality finish of the welds. The quality of the solid steel front forks. every thing else seemed like a cheap copy and therefore a compromise of quality. Not to mention Captain Kangaroo endorsed them every morning. |

Ok so I'll resurrect this old thread and show you a glimpse of hoarding Schwinn bikes. This happened over a period of years and I'm still storing all this crap but I'm leaning towards selling it off. Most are two speed kickbacks and a couple older lever action two speeds or three speeds. OG patina bikes, have a look

I had one of those as a kid in spring of 65. It was blue "Bantom"with white rims.
I learned how to ride a bike on it, it came with training wheels and all.
My brother John took the training wheels off, and I had all kinds of problems balancing on it, and crashed into a wall, so didn't ride it for the rest of the summer.
We came back from summer vacation, and I back got on the damned thing and never had an issue balancing again.
The top bar was removable so it could be a boy's or girl's bike, I remember taking crap for it being "a girl's bike". _________________ Good Luck

The thing that disappoints me is the fact my Mother was terminally ill when my Grandfather learned of the bike parts and decided to "steal" the freshly painted parts in order to assemble the bike for her. The painted parts sat in my Dad's shop for probably 8 years (ready for assembly) before that happened. My Grandfather would have dropped everything and put that bike together immediately for my Mom, had he known.
When my Dad first painted the frame and parts in the late 80's, the old Schwinns had a fair amount of value, and then the internet came along... it's not nearly as hard to find a vintage girl's cruiser in decent (or even restored) condition now, they just cost more. I'm hoping a future Mrs. Youngnstudly will come along someday and I will be able to give Mom's cruiser to her to enjoy. _________________ Vintage Volkswagens: When you're not swearing by them, you're swearing at them |

My Mom decided that she wanted a 1950's Schwinn girls cruiser when I was a kid, so my Dad looked long and hard to find something for her. He ended up buying this frame with the fork, chain guard, fenders, and a junk stem from some old guy's backyard during a garage sale. It had sat in the dirt for many years and was twisted/bent/rusty, so 'Pops' bought it, brought it home, and started copying the factory paint layout so he could restore the parts in between all the customer cars he was painting.
He spent a ton of hours straightening the fenders and chain guard, laid all the stripes out, and did a complete color change from blue/cream to red/cream for my Mom (complete with clear coat). Grandpa (who owned a bike shop) assembled it with mostly new reproduction parts so it would at least be complete for her to ride while he sourced the correct restoration quality parts for it, and it was finally given to my Mom as a gift.
She was unbelievably excited when my Dad gave it to her, and the first thing she did was hop on to test ride it ...Dad just about blew a gasket at that point.
"ARE YOU CRAZY? YOU CAN'T RIDE IT, IT'S FOR SHOW ONLY!!! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH TIME I PUT INTO THE PAINTWORK ON THIS BIKE?" (Her response of course was, "What good is a bike that I can't ride?!?! I told you I wanted a restored cruiser TO RIDE, NOT STARE AT!!!")
Anyways, I think it's a 1953. Never been ridden since it's rebuild, most of the correct parts were never located due to other stuff going on, and the bike has been sitting in this spot for 19 years, only to get washed off once in a while. Still a cool bike though.
