I use the ultra crude but highly effective method of checking for rust on the heater channels and floor pans. I use a hammer and screw driver and check it every inch along the way. If it goes thru the channel or I hear a lot of dust falling inside of the channel I look at the next one.

I don't mind replacing a floor pan as they are pretty damn easy to do even in your driveway as long as you have some basic welding skills. However the heater channel is a major P.I.T.A. to align properly and requires mucho work.

If the owner won't let me check the pan and the channels I also walk away. Its just not worth my time and money to take a chance that they are right with out checking.

OiOiOi, practice makes perfect on the shifting, one day you will be able to do it blind folded. I have to drive a semi with 8 gears through busy city streets delivering ice all day and have to pay more attention to the insane drivers and don't pay no attention to shifting gears. It all comes natural to you.

check tire pressure. uneven tire pressure will do this. dragging brakes usually if brakes are on or being applied. do not run more than 18-20 in fronts and 26-28 in rear tires. more pressure will cause rough ride,bad handling/cornering,braking and etc. i would love to teach you to drive your 67.. i have been driving beetles since august 1965.. raced,street and off road. 3 feet of snow,ice driving schools put on by bmw club of america,auto cross,sand west coast to east coast...

I can't remember the commercial that said, you can't just have one. I have setting in my 2 car garage a 67 beetle, 72 ghia vert and the wife's 73 beetle vert, and to put the iceing on the cake, my 2001 toyota tundra and wifes 2001 Suburban, set out in the cold wishing they could be in the garage. I am all for a 67 only forum. I had a 64 beetle( and not knocking any other years) that I put alot of money into, but was never satisfied with it and sold it and only had the ghia, until I found the 67. I do know what a heater channel is now. I reasearched them. I got the car I wanted. It runs and drives, but it still needs work, I want to learn this car and make it mine. I already have a daily driver, this is for fun, a car that I can learn and love. It does have rust. I don't know of the heater channals are rusty, if they are, they are. I know it's expensive to fix. But if I don't fix it...who will? These cars are special and disapearing, I'd hate to see this little car I've fallen in love with get chopped up, so I'll sacrifice some money to save it.

I think you should know what the heater channels are before you buy one. I may not be the most trusting soul around but I wouldn't depend on the seller to tell me everything that is wrong with the car he's trying to get rid of. The less rust the better. Patients and knowledge is more dependable than luck. Rust is cancer.
Then again... My reasoning for buying a bug is for a project car. I don't need a car. I'm looking for a foundation to build a bug that I may keep for the rest of my life. If I needed a car tomorrow and didn't care if it was in the junk yard in 2 years my attitude might be different. Heater channels and floor pans can't be cheap if your paying someone to do the work.
Anyway... I am not an expert, I just started looking myself.
There is some guess work going into this response so please correct and forgive me if I'm wrong.
The heater channels are the beams that run under the doors from the rear of the frame to the front. They also get the heat from the heat exchangers to the front of the car so it can warm your toes in the winter. I think it is safe to say they are structural ducts. If they rot out completely the car will split in two like Herbie did at the end of the big race where his rear end came in first and the front end came in second.
If rust causes the structure to start failing the first place it would be noticed would be in the doors not closing correctly.
Am I close?

Yeah, I love it, I feel in love with it the moment we rounded the corner and I saw it's little butt sticking out. I guess that's a bad way to buy cars, but I'm in this for the long hall.

I think he was planning on cutting them out and replacing them. I'm not sure what look I am after yet. I just want to see it, hug it, and figure out what it really needs before I decide it's future. My goal is to get it running and de-rusted before I make any disitions. I'd like to get it painted someday, because it was used as a "practice" car for people learning how to paint. The rust is bubbling up in a few places.
