We are a society that believes ads on TV and especially when a well known celebrity is pushing the product. Well, we shouldn't. An "inexpensive" paint job is just another way of saying cheap junk. Hey Burt (Reynolds) hey Pete (Rose) come take a look at my $1200. maaco paint job, I garantee you that you didn't see this kind of "workmanship" before you made your Maaco ads or you would have been choking on your words. I disagree. I had my Vanagon sprayed at MAACO and was very happy with the result. I did the prep work, all they did was spray. It has held up for 5 years. I think I got all I paid for and more. I couldn't afford the $2000 the local body shop wanted. |

Keifernet is right 9 times out of ten and is well known as a know it all. I had heard he was dead but I guess that wasn't the case.
The odds of getting a halfway decent paint job from Maaco are very poor. |

1200 bucks?! I spent that on sandpaper. You can't spend that little of money and expect anything other than shit anymore than you could expect to go to mexico and get a discount rate operation and expect to be healthy afterwards. Remember "buyer beware"? I think they should change that to sucker beware. Anything Burt Reynolds was pushing I would stay away from. His career is inches away from waterbed warehouse comercials and he is going to sell whatever someone is going to pay him to sell. It's either that or hawk his Loni Anderson panty collection. |

Maaco is an auto painter. But painting is only 10% of a "paint job". That's why egroth got a good "paint job"; He did 90% of the work. That's also why there price is about 10% of what a body shop "paint job" would cost.
Maaco's profits are based on volume. They do not make money on quality. |

I am sure Pete rose Wouldnt Gamble his reputation on maaco ads
I heard he got the gig after OJ backed out
While there are exceptions top the rule most maacos are horrible you get what you pay for my paint casted 700.00 (not including primer for a bus. 1200 is alot to pay for a paintjob how much of that was body work ? Ther 299 special is only like three colors too which is the first in series of bait and switch tactics. the only thing maaco has going for it is its nationally recognized name. you wont find many on an insurance company vendor list. stick with the independents it will cost more for sure but they will usually stand behind there rep better too. dont expect some low cost rate either as there is little money in classic car work for body shops. lots of headache and can make lots more money on newer cars. what does pete rose know about cars anyway |

seriously, you will get a better finish with spraypaint if your prepwork is good enough, spray enough and wet sand, after a good wax job, you just spent under $200 and it will look tons better than Maaco or Shieb |

my car was stripped down to bare metal and repainted and i am happy with the results. it was done by maaco. it cost half what i would have paid an independent, and i would never have seen the car stripped to bare metal. if you dont care enough about your car to make sure the body work is quality, then why bother? 99% of a good paintjob is what is underneath. |

Hi i am a Poor volkswagon owner, and maaco is the only chance i got. i just recently checked out a maaco by my house in Florida and i believe that it is the rarest one i have ever seen. They just recently painted a t3 squareback dark blue. and it looked pretty good, cept for the dings here and there. I plan on painting mine, but i have done all the prep work my self. so dont jugde maaco as a whole jugde them each as individual shops. I think this is just a flook shop or something, they have acctually turned out some good lookin cars.
I own a 69 t3 Variant that has everything cept some paint, besides if i do keep this for a long time, it will get repainted to its most original color possible. |

I sort of agree with judging the individual run shops, after all they are "franchised" and some people do still have pride in their work ( to a certain extent) and it is possible to get your "moneys worth" if it is your best or only option(budget/time/skill/place)
But even if they have a painter who can spray and make it look good... they still only put just enough paint on to " call it done" and they use NASON brand paints which is (IMO) shit compared to PPG, Dupont, or other major brand...
I don't agree with the "99% of a good paintjob is what is underneath."
True it's alot in the prep what counts, but that statement makes it sound like housepaint would make it look good...
I know you were just using a "coined phrase" so no offense crzykiley... |

Sorry, I mean Corey... wrong post.
I thought of something else to ad but it is only useful if your not painting your car an OG color.
Many times the paint supply stores will have alot of 'Mistints' laying around and they sell the stuff real cheap. I have checked the shelves over time and gotten several half gallons or quarts or similar colors ( yellows, reds, blues ect ect) and then when I have enough to mix a gallon I buy a empty can and blend them up.
I have gotten gallons of PPG Delstar which is now well over 110 a gallon and up for most colors for about 25-40 bucks.
Hell on a few occasions when I was buying primer and supplies ( to the tune of 200+) they would sometimes GIVE me the mistints I wanted. I got a whole gallon of 2001 Viper silver one day... It's actually close to polar silver... anyways just a thought. check out the suppliers and see what they have in "your favorite brand" |

I worked for Maaco for a total of two hours before I walked out. There are some things I won't even do to an american car! Maaco does not believe in panel replacement, just more mud, very cheap mud at that. Oh, the horrors I saw!! I was also floored by some of the shops habits. They kept the sand paper under lock and key. It was like working in a dungeon it was so dark, yet the front office was bright and neat as a pin. They also had us, body man/women prime our repairs before going to the paint shop. So you'd prime in the body area with all this mud dust floating around. You'd get done and it looked like fuzzy mold. But in thier defense, they have damn good painters. You have to be good to do the volume these guy/gals put out. Granted most are screwed up on Meth, and run around at Mach 3, but with the amount of paint they shoot they have to get good. The best thing you can do if you choose Maaco is, do your own body work and prep. Also be prepared to cut and buff the paint after you get your car back.
It is getting harder and harder to find independant body shops that will do a complete paint job. Most shops can make more off a banged up Honda than a complete paint job. The average Honda pays around $2,500 to $3,000 and has about a 30 hour turn around. Where as a complete paint job can run 30 or 40 hours. Hence you see there reasoning. After reading the post I am very glad of one thing. That I do my own paint and bodywork.
Good Luck!!!!

coined phrase or no, it's proven true in my experience to date. i've driven cars in all states of paint repair and disrepair, and the bodywork seems to be the one thing that makes the most obvious difference between a good and bad paint job. |

I was kinda trying to say if you do good prep work (like your saying Corey) then don't take it to MAACO for spray or get shitty material's, yes the prep is gonna show everything ect. but cheap shit paint is not gonna do it justice in the long haul.
Just like you woudln't want to shoot good quality over some half assed prep work.
Good paint job means just that, good prep, good paint and a painter who can lay it down... Bad paint job... remove any one of those... |
