|

Can anyone tell me if this transmission has the removeable bellhousing I've heard about that can commonly used to bolt up a starter motor to bench test Type I engines? Its for sale locally for not a lot of $$s...

that does not have the removeable bell housing. you can always take it apart and make a couple cuts to make it smaller. _________________ .

Thanks guys, I just thought it'd be handy as it was nearby. I'll keep looking...
Anyone know what particular year I should keep an eye out for?

i have a bell housing cut for this i will sell you for 20 plus shipping |
Appreciate the offer but I suspect the cost of shipping a bellhousing to New Zealand could be a bit prohibitive...

If it's cheap or free, why not just cut the bellhousing off of that one? That's what I have, works like a champ. |

Your looking for a '68 and later tranny. The bellhousing bolts up to the rear of the tranny. Slight difference between 68-71 and 72up. But both will work. That whats bolted to front of this stand

Partly because I’d be a bit reluctant to butcher what may be a perfectly good tranny that may be of use to someone else (parts aren’t all that plentiful down here), partly ‘cos I’ve got nothing to cut it with and partly ‘cos I’d then have to dispose of the remains
I’m not in a desperate hurry for one, its just on my mental list of desirable bits to pick up if the opportunity presents itself... |

The bell housing you're looking for is a Bay Bus '68-'74 (maybe '75) Commonly referred to as a 3 or 5- rib. It'll have a 002 part number.
The later (6-rib) '75?-'79 bell housing is a 091 and takes a different starter. Much longer shaft, more expensive and harder to find used.
The 002 bell housing uses the same starter as any early Bug/Bus. The benefit being you can run a 6v or 12v flywheel/starter on it. With the 091 you can only run 12v flywheels. _________________ Aaron D. Badertscher

Here's what a removable bell housing looks like.
Here's what a cut down bell housing looks like.
