Here is what I mean, these 4lug rims (see picture) fit all the late model 4 lug beetles, I'd like a set of non-slotted rims (like the early style beetles). I know this sounds crazy, but has anyone ever welded up the slots? I've got this half baked creation going of a super beetle and wanted to see what it would look like. I suppose I could buy adapters and put on 5 lug rums, but if I could create the from 4 lug I thought that might be interesting.
So, stupid idea or has someone already done this? I was worried the wheel might get way out of balance.
If someone has done it would you happen to have pictures? |

I don't suppose it will matter THAT much, but didn't they put those slots in the wheels to help cool the brakes better? _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Good point, but then why did the old style rims not have slots?

I think auto makers were in competition to stay current with gadgets and goodies. Most auto makers in the late 60s were going with slotted wheels to cool brakes so VW followed suit. I dont think it made a big difference in the vw .. but that is what they had to do to stay hip!

If I converted to 5lug is there a difference in the offset between the 4 lug and 5 lug?

Stock Steve - thanks for the pic, I do think I like those, it's always better to see them on a car first.

Yes, I agree. I bought a set myself--always nice to have some extra hub caps around--and these do impart a rather different look--probably just have to be careful about not bashing them into curbs--though in reality, they may not stick out that much more than stock hub caps. I haven't tried mine out yet. They're not a bad deal when you order them online from CIP1, which is what I did. The plastic baggies they come wrapped in have little stickers: "Made in Taiwan R.O.C." (as if that is any real surprise)...
I was also thinking about this thread's original genesis, and was thinking about how, on '66-'69 Sedan wheels, the centers were painted black, and the outers were painted white; the black areas I think would tend to "disguise" the slots a bit--unlike on the all-silver '70 & later wheels, where the silver background tends to make the slots "stand out" more. Anyway, just my observation. _________________ Stock Steve

I wondered about that thought too, lots of times I have seen red rims with caps like this and white wall tires. I cannot afford real white walls and thought about the fakes, but reading on TheSamba i've heard good and bad stories. This car is my daily driver and a super, so anything different I do is going to be shunned by the die hard beetle guys, I just want something different. I've got a not so great set of old style bumpers I plan to mod to fit the car.

funny thing jashv I was thinking about doing the same thing on my wife's new toy. I really like the smoothie look of the wheels. I would assume that if I cut them all the same size and weigh them the only thing would be the amount of weld you put on..
I have a set of the smoothie caps on my 65 bug, they were cheap but will look killer. a good wax and some rust protection on the back will keep em good for awhile. If not they were only 10 bucks sheesh
Need smoothies like this.. I just recently painted the rims viper red..

I've used both white wall inserts and real white walls on cars, and appreciate the plusses and minuses of both. On a daily driven car, my experience has been that the inserts will start to get chewed up on the edges and start to look crummy. My experience is also that the sidewalls of the tires also start to get worn from the edges of the inserts (so you end up with this oddball wear groove). While mega-expensive, I've had very good daily driving results with the Coker/BFG whitewall radials (I am currently using the narrow ww's @ 165R15); the wheels are stock 4-inchers that I didn't want to futz around with two-toning:

That's not the "Pembroke" rack, TC (which I again thank you for the very gracious heads-up on)--that's just a plain old Flat Four repro--suitable for every day use. The Pembroke rack is much more elegant--and doesn't get exposed to the elements nearly as much. When I get a chance I'll try to track down a picture, post my minor "freshening up."
This is it in "as purchased" condition:
