So here's the dilemma. About a month ago a classmate of mine found a stray dog that she couldn't keep. The local shelter said that they won't adopt her out because she is a "bully breed", meaning she is of pitbull or stafforshire (sp?) terrier mix. So on impulse I took her in. My landlord said I could build a dog run out back but quickly took that notion back after seeing her and being afraid that she would get out and hurt somebody. I just got my school schedule and there is no way I can keep her in my 1br apt 5 days a week for 8+ hours, it just isn't fair to her. So if any of you guys want a kickass pup who has been nothing but a blast to have around, then you would be getting yourself a great dog, provided you can give her more time and space than I will be able to. Or, if you know of anyone who would like to take her in please let me know. This absolutely breaks my heart to do this to her but I really cannot think of any other option, believe me I've tried.

Here's the stats:
Female 6-8mos old
Not yet spayed
All shots and de-worming
~38lbs.
Very social with people and other dogs.
Good off leash at dog parks and dog beach in Huntington.

Huge thanks to everyone for helping keep this thread on track. I have a couple prospective adopters that I fully trust with her. I know I could get her a home right this second with a craigslist post but I don't just want to throw her away to the first person that wants her.

Of course I'll keep everyone posted. I'm in the process of picking up a crate and may give that a shot for a few weeks. I just want the best thing for my dog.

Be sure to read up on good crate training techniques. You could probably get some information from your local humane society or from almost any book on raising a puppy. The main, maybe most important thing (in my opinion) is that the crate is NEVER a place of punishment. It is NOT where you put the dog when she has done something bad or whatever. It should be her safe place, her den, her bed, her home.

My dog takes herself to her crate at night when she's tired, when there are thunderstorms, or when I am vacuuming. Also, not that I've ever put her there as punishment, but when I yell at her or tell her no (gotten into the trash or whatever) she runs straight for her crate and hides out. It's her place.

Our Sheltie absolutely loves his crate, which he has completely outgrown.
We couldn't shut the door if we wanted to, but he feels comfortable laying in there anyway.
He'll go and fall asleep in there even when we are all home.

I think the general idea is that you want a crate large enough that they can stand up and turn around inside, yet not large enough to give them extra room to "soil".
The theory is that if they would have to lay in it, they will hold it as long as possible to avoid doing so.

I always thought of the crate as 'jail'.
I take it back...my two dogs love the fucking crate.
It's like a 'den'...so, wtfever....I was wrong..wife was right.
Kongs with peanut butter/ buscuits....will keep 'em happy.
NAES...don't stress, that dog is adorable, and someone cool will SNATCH her just like that.
You are doing all the right things...
Sorry you have to give her up...who knows...the crate may work if you exercise her enough.

I was brought up not to keep animals in your house, but then I lost a dog to heat stroke. My next dog, an American Bulldog, came from the rescue already crate trained and it's work out well.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words. So here's the update.

I'm keeping this bitch!!!

I found a dogwalker who only charges $25 a day. I figure if I have Luna out with them 1-2 times a week and indoors/crated the other days then she'll still be socialized with other dogs and exercised. I might try to con my brother into coming down from his place and hanging out every week or two. That's still up in the air cuz as those who have met him know he's not exactly all there. Might be good therapy for him though.

I'll just have to cut Starbucks out of my budget and eat a few more sammiches at home but it's totally worth it.
