Do you guys know about this?
www.cruisetotheclassic.com/Cars.html
Reed and Heather Cowan (with the help of some friends) are planning on driving about 20 of their air-cooled VWs from Rochester, Minnesota to their new digs in Ventura, Ca.
Looks like about a dozen Things in the mix----long ones, short ones, military,
a few Acapulos, etc.
It should be quite an adventure. |

So what's really the deal here?
Are Reed And Heather really leaving Minnesota to live in California?
Or is this just a grand fling driving a bunch of vehicles across the country?
How many VW's are in his collection???
What about Reed's Country Buggy??? Still have it? Is it going to California too?
I'm really curious about the CB.....
Fill in the blanks for us with some detail if you can.
Regards,

^ His Country Buggy is in that list of cars migrating to Cali. Fourth one from the bottom.
That looks like an interesting trip. Not sure if I would trust my Thing to make it that far (though it hasn't really let me down before). |

What better scenario could you have for a breakdown than surrounded by 20 aircooled veedubs and their dedicated followers? |

That is the long range plan, but it probably will take quite a while to complete the move. At this point it looks like about 20 cars will be driving, but that depends on the road-worthiness of each one. A number of cars are already out there and there are a few in Minnesota that won't be ready.
And, yes, the Country buggy is on the list.
As I understand it, the plan is to depart Rochester, Mn on Saturday 6/6
and arrive in Irvine on 6/10 ( about 2000 miles, depending on route).
Then taking in all of the open houses, Octo, toy & lit show and then the Classic on 6/14. Eventually the cars will make their way to Reed and Heather's new digs near Ventura. |

iowegian,
Thanks for the info....especially on the CB.
I try to help Bill Moore in Oz keep track of the CB's in the US.
There aren't many, but they can pretty easily disappear if people aren't very informative about what they are doing with them.
In this case, we have a lot more info than we usually get.
That sounds like a real adventure to go on.
I agree having all those VW folks in the trek makes it likely that any problems can probably be attended to on the road.
I just imagine one of those Things will have an ample supply of essential parts on board to address any issues. Something tells me there might be quite a collection of tools accompanying all the VWs, too.
btw, how many vehicles does Reed have in his collection of VW's?
There are twenty vehicles on the current list.......are all of them Reed's?
Are all of his vehicles going to CA and are they all being driven. or are some getting towed or trailered?
Sounds like quite a project physically, not to mention the expense.

From what I understand most are being driven, some towed. There will be a support vehicle with spare parts, possible spare cars as well.
Those are all Reed and Heather's VW's... some are already in their new home in California.

Again I'll ask the question............
How many VW's does Reed own?????
And are all of them going to CA?????

And some that have never made it to Minnesota from Cali. |
uuhhh ......I'm confused by this statement.......I think you mean from MN to CA.
Right???
To my understanding, limited as it may be, this is a Southwestern migration, not a Northeastern migration

I am not too good with the written word.
20 cars owned by Reed are going from Minnesota to California in addition to some that he has purchased in California, but never sent to Minnesota.
(at least three fall into that category)
For all I know, there might be more already out there.
So, the Grand Total?? Twenty-five +/- |

I believe so... it is their ultimate intention to live in their new home in California.... with their collection of cars. _________________ * |

So are they looking for drivers to help with their move? |

Reed's web site doesn't specifically say they are, but when you look at the list of vehicles which need to be moved, very few drivers are listed.
http://www.cruisetotheclassic.com/Cars.html
They may be entertaining that idea.
Might want to tune up your resume.

Hi, Ed:
At one time, Reed said that they had more drivers than cars, but that might be changing as reality sets in for a lot of people. It is my understanding
that cars are being assigned to drivers as each car is totally ready to go
and names will be posted up as that happens.
It does sound like your kind of action, though, and you do have Herbie experience------------ |

Hello!
Yes, we are making the journey! Yes, we are moving to CA for good some day we hope. For now, we'll settle for some cars and some fun! We had a family medical emergency that took us to New York City for three weeks. So, our plans have been on hold.
We were going to have a party on Friday, June 5th, but is has been way toned down to a "gathering". Throwing a party is a little more than we can handle at this point
It took until now, but here is the long awaited ROUTE...subject to change. I'm not very good at Mapqwest so I had some difficulty getting a link for you folks. Departing Saturday, June 6th about 9:00 AM.
Rochester, MN I-90 W to I-35 S to I-80 to I-76 to US-24 to I-25 to I 40 to I-15 and on to our house from there. We are planning on driving 400-500 miles a day, so we figure about 4-5 days with some signtseeing and fun.
If you or your club are along this route and are interested in having breakfast, lunch or dinner with our gang of VW enthusiasts, please let me know. If you have any sugestions for hotels, restraunts or want to cruise along for awhile, send an email please include a good telephone number and your location so we can be in communications.
Happy Trails... |
