Ok, I've been meaning to do a thread on this for some time now, but until now I haven't had the time. But now I got a few minutes to spare so here it goes.

About a year ago I heard from one of my friends that her grandfather had a VW bus sitting on his property that he was looking to get rid of. I called him up, and after chatting for a while I got the following info, the bus was missing the engine, and some part from the right side rear wheel, but other than that, it was completely original.

So, fast forward to the last weekend of August, and me, my father, and 2 of my friends go on a road trip to pick it up. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story:

This is how it sat when we got there after a six hour drive:

First we dragged the rear end sideways so it would line up with the trailer:

Here you can see how far down in the earth it sat, luckily the three remaining tires all aired up, for as much help as that was since they were all locked up.

Then it was just a matter of dragging it up on the trailer with hand-power. The trailer didn't have a winch so we brought some brand new 2 ton wire winches, these didn't hold up to the pulling so we ended up using a 60 year old chain block rated for 500 kg to get it up there.

And some artzy shots. Very Happy

The best too ya, I've seen your other threads on this bus. That is quite an under taking. I'll be watching all the way.

I hope you aren't going to get rid of the impact absorbing moss. Laughing

BTW, how can something so wet look so solid under the windshield

I've been wondering that myself, the paint under the moss is in insanely good condition for a bus that's been sitting for 15 years in a field under a tree. It's gonna be very interesting when I power wash it this weekend before pulling it inside a shed for winter storage.

The plan is to do a resto, maybe not a full resto, I'm maybe thinking OG-paint, but we'll see. First thing on the list is unlocking the 3 remaining wheels, and then see if I can get the fourth one on there. Then I'm gonna start looking at the rust in the floors, I'm not sure if I'll have to replace the floors or not, at the moment there's too much stuff in there to tell.

Ok, I promised more photos, so here we are. These were taken with a cell phone camera so they aren't quite the same quality, but nevertheless, they show a bus.

First stop on the trip down, it was a 500 km drive one way, with only me and my father driving due to the huge trailer. I'm the guy in the brown jacket and the beanie.

Getting the trailer in place was a bit of a chore since the road down hill was to narrow for our Volvo.

The bus, before we touched anything.

Trying to figure out how we're gonna slide this thing sideways without the fourth tire. I'm the guy in the gray hoodie and beanie.

Slowly sliding it over to get it to line up with the trailer.

An overall pic of all the other cool stuff this guy had, sadly no other VW's, but a Ford van that from the rear end looked like a weird VW bus. Sadly I didn't get a pic of the Ford.

More winching to get it up there. The tractor we're using to stop the trailer moving is actually a Porsche. Smile

Closeup on the 60 year old chain block that actually saved the day when all our other cable winches had broken, and the block was only rated for 500 kg while the winches were rated for 2000 kg Shocked

Well, here are all the pics of getting it on the trailer. I'll be right back with getting it of the trailer. Very Happy

Here we are, safe and sound home after the 1000 km round trip that only took us a little over 23 hours (no sleeping, we drove in shifts).

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here we have a pic of me backing up with the trailer to get ready to unload it. Do note my trusty old Volvo, for me there's nothing like a Volvo when it comes to watercooled and nothing like a VW or Harley when it comes to aircooled. Very Happy

Setting up for unloading, with the chain blocks I had in my garage but forgot to bring with me on the trip.

Some interior shots that show the OG color quite well, can anybody tell me the code for this color?

You European guys don't generally mess around with roll-on Tremclad paint and bondo; you go whole hog from what I've seen. I suspect that this will be a fully restored show winner in 2 years. Good luck.

I haven't really had the opportunity to get a really good look under it, but everything is at least covered with surface rust under there. So I think worst case scenario is a complete floor and subframe replacement. But from what I've seen so far, I think I might get away with less. Time will tell. This weekend I'm gonna try getting it inside my shed and maybe give it a wash as well.

My plans so far is to get it rolling, assemble an engine for it, and repair all the structural damage as well as beat out the dents. Then I'm thinking of just doing an OG-paint resto, and just fix all the rust spots. The paint looks quite good on it, so I'm hoping I can get away with just a buff and polish on this one.

Well, full show resto is a bit unlikely, but I'm definitely gonna shoot it with proper paint, I'm thinking of getting a SATA system, but that for when I get my new shop next summer.

The reason I got this bus was because it was free, or nearly free, I paid 95€ for it and a sweet completely original bicycle from the '70s which is gonna be worth more than what I paid for the whole package once I put new tires on it. Smile If I would be buying one I'd definitely get one that's a lot less rusty. But as a fellow VW freak said; "free is always best" Smile

What's really bugging me is that I forgot to take a picture of the M-Plate, and now I'm 500 km away from the bus (studying in Helsinki, bus is in Pietarsaari where I'm from). So I can't decode it and find out if there's anything interesting going with this bus. Except the early euro towbar. Smile

I would think so, or something close based on the color on the dash.

My thoughts exactly, we'll have to see when I get the M-Plate decoded.

Anyhow, as for final plans, I'm kinda thinking of putting a rock-and-roll bed in the back, and make a nice party/festival van out of it. The point is though that everything will be made to look like it's stock or close to stock.

Nope, my avatar is some old hippie standing in the middle of his ganja field looking smug. A friend sent it to me saying that that's what I'm gonna look like when I'm 60, so I started using it as an avatar. Smile
