Working on a customers engine and found a missing case saver. Case is bored for 94s already so the common 14mmx2.0 OD wont work.

I thought the original 10mm case savers were 10 id x 12 od from the factory but one local shop never heard of them while the other said they havent been made in oveer 10 years.

Other than pulling all the savers to install the common 8mm id x 12mm od and buying 8mm studs is there any other solution? Im sure the customer would prefer the $2 solution over the $100 one.

I didnt think it would be such a big deal either and the local shops didnt even want to help. I try to keep the locals open by stopping there first but them not even wanting to get one from a junk case (and they have stacks of them) shows why they will be out of business soon. When I was working at the shop I would go out of my way for the small stuff a customer needed, they would remember that and come back for the expensive stuff instead of going on line, seems like the writing is on the wall...

Not much room to retap the case and use these.

no it,s a 10x14 mm insert, not 10x12, there isant enough material for what you want.the 12mm thread depth would exceed toe 10 mm dia. so you just need a reg ole 10x14.easy.but if you mesure the hole you will find it is about 12 mm but you are not messuring the od of the threads but the small dia.so it may be a $2.00 fix. I got to thenken (smoke signals)and went and checked my kit. then the light went off, or rather on.

I forgot about the TimeSerts until I was looking at an 043 cylinder head today with them in it for the rocker studs. 12x 1.5 OD, 10x1.5 ID

Yes the TimeSerts work excellent.

ask Rimco
Timesert does not tell you the OD, (secret Rolling Eyes)

But the regular 10 x1.5 inserts has the same OD as 12mm, and you know it has the same thread pitch by definition..... 99% sure there is no mystery, it is 12x1.5, that is the good news

Bad news: you have to buy the kit anyway to get the installer/expander tool, unless a local shop has a kit you can use.

Call Time Fastener Company Inc., They make Time-Serts.
They are in Reno, NV
5301-G Longley Lane
Reno, Nevada, 89511
(775) 829-1026
(800) 423-4070

I did when I needed some inserts, and since there is not someone who sells them close to me. I was able to buy directly from them.
As for setting them to keep them from unscrewing, I just use a bolt, screw in until I felt it reach the area that locks and it worked.
Also they come in different lengths.
10x1.50mm are .370, .433, .550, .669, .800, .866, and .960in in lengths.

Get a catalog from them, they have all kinds of kits for repairing threads.

Are you sure they are 12mm OD? 12mm OD is for the 8mm studs.
The current standard for 10mm studs is a 14mm OD but the smaller harder to find ones used for 94's are the Scat 1/2" ~13MM others make them as well.
I just bought a set in the classified from the early 80's.You could also offset drill the hole in a pinch.

Yes 12mm OD. They are stock 71-72 10mm stud case savers. If I could just find a junk case I would just pull the one I need out but no luck locally. The 14mm savers are the oversize to repair a pulled 12mm saver. There is not enough meat in the case to offset either. I saw the set in the classifieds and emailed the seller but they are repair savers also and he said the OD was a standard measurement so no use to me.

The customer is in no hurry and has more time than money so I will just wait to get the time sert and install.

turtlebuggy, thanks for the info

Do you REALLY need one? I have a set but have to search for them. If you email me at [email protected] I can print out the request or I'll never remember to look for them.
