Sputtering and Backfiring from my carb. 28, pict 1200cc S.P.

I recently had my pre-heat pipe crack. When it cracked, the engine would sputter and backfire and I would loose power, however it would not stall. I welded up the crack and re-installed the pre-heat pipe. My engine still sputters when I accelerate, only this time it doesn't start sputtering until the revs are higher. I re-adjusted my timing completely and that didn't do the trick either. Starting to think that it is my carb since when it sputters the banging noise comes out of the top of my carb. It is a 28 PICT stock vw carb on a 1200cc single port. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I may be able to fix this? What should I adjust on my carb?

Think I may have figured it out. Seems I may have dropped a valve, oil is shooting out of my exhaust.
