Is it just me or is there 2 different colors for poppy red, 1 being orange red, the other being a red. Paint shop codes come out with the red, where can I find a code for the orange red? Would like to paint my 67 vert this color, if I can't find it going to go to 64 mustang poppy red. |

Poppy Red has always been just that- red. Not enough orange to call it red orange to me. VW had several reds in the 70s- but I'd say Clementine had the red orange mix pretty well covered.
If you paint a VW a mustang color you will hate it more than the time you rented a hotel room for your daughter on prom night. _________________

... take a look in thesamba technical/upholstery section for color comparison...red names can be confusing, like ultramaroon, L276... seems like it has no red, at all... all in the eye of the beholder, I guess. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

From what I can tell, there were two Poppy Reds: the more orange L54 (used from 1951 to 1954) and the more red L54K (used 1961, '64, '69, and '70).
See more at The Great Big Sortable Table of Volkswagen Beetle Paint Colors:
http://cricketseed.com/beetle/colors_1949-79.html
http://www.paintref.com has these codes for the earlier orange Poppy Red:
Ditzler PPG: 71087
Dupont: 246-27944H, 93-27944H
RM BASF: U5849R
Martin Senour: 20512
Hope that helps. _________________ '66 Beetle |

That table of colors link is pretty nice, pics of the actual color, especially on cars, would be insanely helpful (like what is done on this site).
Also, Ultramaroon for 1955 isn't even close to maroon at all, it isn't even a variation of red. Whoever used maroon as the color sample for that failed in the biggest way and needs to research what Ultramaroon actually looks like. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

The 2 paint shops both come up with the "red" color when mixed which is what is listed. Trying to have local VW dealership get an answer. May have to pick a completely different color. And I thought finding parts was going to be the hard part!! |

@Keith: Good catch; I fixed Ultramaroon. Thanks. There are bound to be at least a couple more errors, given that 1) there are more than 400 entries on the page; and that 2) I got all the original color information off the internet.
Photos of the actual color as painted on cars would be cool, but 1) someone would have to find and gather and resize all of them; and 2) someone would have to vet them to make sure the colors were factory correct; and 3) I don't have time to be that someone.
Having said that, when it comes to The Great Big Sortable Table of Volkswagen Beetle Paint Colors, anyone who feels that I've failed in the biggest way is entitled to double his money back. Guaranteed!
