I'm actually working on a sand rail. It sat outside uncovered for about 20 years, so the original engine got water inside and it started to fall apart. I picked up a 1980 Vanagon drivetrain (engine number CV043944), took a little fabricating to get it mounted. My issue now is the wiring. Every single wire on the ECU harness is white.... There are only 2 connectors to the vehicle, a 6-wire rectangular and one that looks almost like a relay connector. I have the relay that was attached to the starter.

All the wiring diagrams I see have color-coded wires, so I am at a loss how to get this up and running. I assume that at a minimum I need power and ground to the ECU and power from the ECU to the fuel pump. I will have other wiring questions later, but I'll settle for this now.

This should help for part of what you're doing. Info on the "double relay" wiring, operation, and possible substitute of 2 generic relays for the VW part:

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/DoubleRelay.html

The Bay Window forum here should have more info on the fuel injected 2.0 as it was used in late model year Bays

If you don't have a Vanagon Bentley manual, a Haynes air cooled version should help and may have an ECU pin out test table that would help ID ECU pin numbers to their parts.

Neil.
