In a high performance application, what is the best ignition for the price, that uses a distributor, presently on the market? _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

The best dollar value for a new distributor today is the CB MegaSpark. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

hmmm, yeah I'm not sure what I was thinking either.
Probably meant that the best distributors ever were, was in the 90's, and then the mind wandered.
But what would be best for a particular distributor...would depend what kind it is. so....what kind is it? |

IMHO his mind is still wandering
Also IMHO a stock vacuum advance distributor matched to the correct carburetor. Hipo does not necessarily mean faster than fast in my book= dependable, economical. _________________ Roads Scholar

I just finished my first hipo build I did a lot of research for an entry level ignition came up with the magnaspark II ready to run kit from CB $226. Comes with plug wires, coil, distributor and coil mount. $197 without coil mount. Comes with springs and bushings to adjust timing curve and total advance. Looks nice too. |

Best non programmable, most likely the Magnaspark II.
Best vintage, A Bosch SVDA rebuilt and curve designed for the engine. (But you need the correct carbs to make it work well)
Best programmable. - Well there are a couple of solutions. The loved by some, hated by others CB Black box with a locked distributor of your fancy. Another loved by some and hated by others, 123 USB/Bluetooth.
Crank trigger stand alone, Megajolt, CB stand alone, MSD, MS, ECM XDi series. |

Good point:
2276cc (82x94)
SLR XLR 310 on 108 deg LC, (268 deg dur. @.050"; .417" lift at cam, w/ 1.4:1 rockers .584")
Performance Workshop Stage 3 heads
CB 1 3/4" merged exhaust
Italian Weber 48IDA's, w/ Doug Berg grooved 37/42mm vents
10.2:1 cr
Trying to push the 200HP envelope.
Right now I'm using a '90's Berg Stinger S4 ignition which has the auto retard function above 5500 rpm. These were used on drag cars back in the day, and many V8 gear heads swear by them, but... Parts for them are getting hard to come by. To wit, when I acquired this ignition it didn't come with a balast resistor which you are supposed to use if you're using this system on the street. The search I went through to get one of those ballasts was crazy. However, the engine ran great and I didn't have the 3rd prog. hole drilled. No flat spot, smooth, ran STRONG. I've made a couple of changes, and the engine right now is being assembled. I've gone from 1 5/8" merged to 1 3/4", I've added the the grooved vents, I had Steve Long regrind the cam to go from being on a 106 deg. LC to 108, and I've bumped the CR from 9.4 to 10.2. I'm hoping I've picked up around 15 ponies with the changes.
FWIW, the look of a VW engine bay with stock looking 48's and a Bosch 010 to me is sexy AF. Here's what it looks like presently:

Really you got to nail down which distributor you want. If you want vintage look, Like a 010, I would encourage you to stick to points , and trigger a analog cdi box from it. You can get older 6aL/7al that are analog that will outlast digital stuff that is brand new. I picked up a older 7AL2 on ebay for $75, and a older Crane Hi6N (Nascar) for $125. Both reliable and last a lifetime. This also lets you run hi output coils that will give your 200 hp engine a edge.
If you dont go points, I would skip modules and get mag pickup distributor only, like a real MSD and trigger the analog CDI off that. This is the best/most reliable way to have a hot spark and not be left alongside the road.
You mentioned "whats on the market". Not much that is new is reliable when pushed to the limit that is also cheap. |

Here's some feedback on the combo.

Here's a short review about the Winterburn CDI with a Glenn Ring Bosch .010.
I bought my 54 Oval/'70 chassis almost 10 years ago. The car was complete and extremely well done and detailed. Life happened and I've not had a chance to play with it until recently. The car had a 2276 built on an ARPM case with 48IDF Webers and a Compufire distributorless ignition. Earlier this year I spent quite a bit of time sorting out the Webers and now have them as close as I can get them to perfect without a wideband set up.....which is coming soon as I've ordered an 1 5/8" Vintage Speed Abarth style exhaust that has the bungs built in.
Enter the Ring/Winterburn ignition replacement for the Compufire.
I had read a lot on here about the Compufire and in almost everything I read, it became obvious that the Compufire was "lacking".
I first ordered one of Glenn's 010s knowing I'd eventually end up with a CDI of some sort. Just going back to a Kettering/points style system by itself was a big improvement over the 009 based Compufire. There was a crispness in the throttle response and a much improved transition to the mains at 2500 RPMs(which was already good...just better now). On top of that, Glenn's distributor is absolutely beautiful!
Not one to leave well enough alone, I studied all I could find on CDI systems. I wanted something simple that I could run with my Bosch blue coil and one that I could switch between CDI and Kettering.
There wasn't much info here on anything other than MSD and Mallory. I did find a mention of the Winterburn system but no in depth info. Several of the Porsche and classic sports car sites did have the info I was looking for, so I ordered one.
The Winterburn box was extremely easy to install. I made a wiring harness custom tailored to my car. I soldered all of the connections and used heat shrink.....looks good if I do say so myself. I mounted the box on the package tray....it has a really cool simple vintage look.
The engine fired off cold on about the second revolution! Came to a super smooth idle at a bit less than 1000 RPM, which was approximately 150 RPM faster than it was previously(I've got to re-adjust the carbs to lower it a bit and do a LBI). I didn't notice much difference at roads speeds but again, like when I first installed Glenn's distributor, it just seems to run a bit more "free".
It's an obvious improvement in efficiency.
Anyway, dealing with both theses guys is extremely enjoyable. The communications are fantastic and their products are first rate.
I'm not a real technical dude but I don know when something "works" in the real world!
Oh, and btw, I'm not much of a "forum type", but this place has been extremely helpful. I could not enjoy my Bug as much as I do without it!
Pictures of the installation will follow.
Thanks,
Norris |

What size valves are in the Tims heads, how is the porting on the manifolds (any welding), and are you running heaterboxes like in your photo? |

42x37.5 Yes, welding above intake ports in the heads; manifolds match ported, no welding on those.
Heater boxes were part of an old Berg merged heater box system with a 1 5/8" pipe running through the box. Wish I had one of these in 1 3/4", but I don't. Will not be running heater moving forward. _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

If you like/want the classic look of the 010, then go Dub shop crank trigger and use a msd 6al2 programmeable.
I doubt you will hit 200 hp. But you will be close. Most likely low 190's |

Putting crank fire on will completely ruin the nostalgic look of the classic 010. If that is what you are after then just use the 010 with the CB Black box.
Ignition system doesn't care if it is a stock 1600 or a 200 HP 2332. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK
