I have been out of the VW scene a LOOONG time, but had restored quite a few beetles in the late 80's early 90's, and was a VW drag racer and as well during those years.
I recently picked up a basket case restoration project and am approaching the time for an interior. Back in my day the Scat kits and sew fine were pretty nice for the money.
Any advice on who makes a good kit these days??
The car is a cal-look 67 beetle, steel sunroof, Indian red.
thanks in advance!! peter |

After being disappointed by TMI, I spent money with Sewfine and have never looked back. If I want something specific, I call or email and they always take care of me. 10+ years and they've not disappointed yet
I cannot speak about SCAT as I don't have experience w them.. _________________ modok wrote:

Another vote for Sewfine. Their interior stuff is still very well done, and they'll also do custom designs. Easy to work with too...

Thank you Gents!! Sew fine it is. I’ve always been pretty happy with stockish interiors, but do like decent quality Any opinions on colors? See pics of the car below👇 It was painted 8 years ago, just been sitting. It was started by a good friend of mine who has built some very nice cars over the years. The paint work is fantastic. It’s got early front fenders, a sunroof grafted in, the fat chrome, pan fully restored and painted as nice as the top. Built trans and a fairly stout 2180. I have everything to install one pcs side glass and cal-look seals…would prefer to full chrome all over if not to spendy.
I am also looking for advice on buying:
Factory stock type speedo repo? smiths electronic?
Turn signal stalk assembly, j bugs?
Full chrome side glass, rear pop outs and the door glass as well.
Complete bumpers with over riders
And thanks again for the advice!!

I like your black fender beading as I have it on my squareback.

Nice squareback! I like the wheels, never seen the combo before but looks appropriate.
I still have a little fender fitting to do prior to trimming the beading. I think I should roll the front fender back a touch, and the rears forward a tiny bit. |

Nice red 67.
I have three 67's. One Javagreen is a driver, one Zenithblau is a weekend track car and the pile-o-parts is just that, a pile-o-parts.
Is that a real 67 vert decklid? I have one and I paid handsomely for it. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Those are easy enough to make. All you need is the vents from a '71, the welder of your choice and a lotta time with nothing better to do.
I'll make one for you if I have a bent '71 lid to cut up.

I always liked Berg's resto- custom '67. If I'm not mistaken it had a kick- ass once piece window installation.
I have a NOS San Bernardino Glass one piece window kit in my stash. I even have the little cable Cal Stops if I can find 'em.

Finish it. Run it. Life is short. You don't want to be an old dude in a rocking chair with a kick ass Cal Look on jack stands.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The OG speedo in my '67 turned over a buncha times and kept on goin'. I probably still have it although I couldn't tell you for sure. I probably have a milk crate full of '67 speedometers.
If you want to do something a little bit trick use a '68 speedo. It looks just like '67 except is has the gas gauge. Use a '68- up sending unit.
Cal rubber will get you on the road.
Backing up a bit, a running car is magnetic. It will attract the parts you want to bring it up to the level you want.
A car on jack stands grounds out its magnetism. The physics of a car on jack stands are,
"A car on jack stands tends to remain on jack stands."
Same logic goes for bumpers. Put bumpers on it. Don't worry about perfect bumpers. Put skanky bumpers on it. Perfect bumpers will eventually find their way to your perfect '67.

Nice piece of eye candy you have there!
Try Avery's Air Cooled in Kelso, WA ... not too far from you so shipping wouldn't take that long:
https://averysaircooled.com
I've have very good luck with reproduction parts from Wolfsburg West. They make some of their own parts/products rather than just pass on poor to mediocre quality stuff like many of the other online retailers do:
https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/#
BTW ... Turn signal switch for a '67 (you may want to have a seat before clicking on the link):

For rubber seals you can't beat West Coast Metric:

I always liked the '66- '67 directional switch. I would even paint one ivory white or silver beige and run it in an earlier VW. I've salvaged maybe a dozen '67s over the years and likely a dozen more '66s. That means I have a dozen '66- '67 switches in a milk crate somewhere.
I reckon it's a fifty buck swap meet find, maybe a twenty dollar find twenty years ago. Buy two of 'em. Toss the extra one in your inevitable tote full o' spares. It will never break and never wear out if you haver a spare.

Thanks for all the info!! I’m finding some good stuff and some so so… as I pick up odds and ends, typical of the repop industry. I’ve been involved with automotive restorations and motorsport my whole working life so I know the drill here. Some things are unusable, some are 80% “there”, and some 60% “there”.
Just spent 3 days disassembling 2 pair of “new” running boards(that came with the car) in order to straighten them out and get a good fit, then repaint, glue the rubber back on straight, and finally fit them to the car. Back in the day they came out of the box and onto the car 15min per side..
Wolfsberg west seems to have the best overall quality of the stuff I’ve got. West coast metric used to have very good clean rubber, now it feels soft, and lots of flashing that needs to be trimmed and detailed.
Overall, car taking shape nicely. |

Just for curious/ here’s another upholstery shop to check out . I know nothing about his prices but his work is really nice looking. Unfortunately he’s in ghe Phillipines but he’s pretty creative and offers quite a different set of styles and colors.

Again, Wolfsburg West. Their bumpers are pricey but are the nicest available, by far. Note that they're generic for '50-'67 cars, so the rear bumper won't have the angled overriders that were a one-year-only thing for '67.

very, VERY nice car !
There are quite a few YT videos on ACVW speedometer restoration. Seemed fairly straightforward & a few even gave sources for the face & needles.
Just another avenue ... stay safe

More updates! Lots of work fitting the tin. Tightened up the areas around the manifolds, cyl tin, oil cooler.
Then on to the tank, mounting the pump inside, reversed the stock float to make room for the pump. Added baffles and will install foam as well, plus I extended the lower fuel feed out near the RH front wheel opening to make draining the tank easier.
Time to paint all the tin work and tank!
I’ve also tidied up the wiring and finally got the chrome on.

Ok. I was under the impression that this was gonna be a run of the mill restore and drive build.
This latest update just took the build to a whole new level of WOW!
Really nice work on the fuel tank and engine tin fitting.
The weld quality seen in the fuel tank pics are above the average garage/shade tree mechanic.
That "stack of dimes" weld on the fuel pump access panel is just lovely.
This comes from a guy that spent 26 years inspecting industrial welding for a living.
So, with the fuel tank mods and an engine that appears to be a high HP build.
What is your goal for this car build? _________________ I have learned over the years.

Beautiful bug!! What a lovely red monster!
Just my 2c on the original question, I have no experience with Sewfine other than it looks stunning, no idea about Scat, but I am about to install my interior, I have the TMI tweed interior kit, which out of the box is BEAUTIFUL, a far cry from their basket weave (which I've installed too in my squareback and that looked and worked well).
I don't think anyone can be unimpressed by the TMI Tweed. Just my thoughts. Can't wait to see what you decide on. _________________ '85 Vanagon GL, weekender package, 1.9 wbx named Freddie/ '61 Beetle named Ringo/ '78 Dodge Monaco which is nothing like the Bluesmobile so please don't cast that oily rag upon it. |
