thought I would toss this up .
looking for ONLY experience with these 4 sealants !!
I have in my hands all 4 , since I work at Mercedes we use Loctite 5970 on everything and nothing leaks on all the Benz motors where its used .
I've been using it on my vw motors as well with excellent /same results .
BUT hey I have a new motor going together with a TF1 case and since I have all sealants available figured might give something else a go .
who's using 518 , 574 and 1211 where and how and results . _________________ B.C's fastest street legal vw , June 2006 Hot VW's feature car 9.81 sec at 145.26mph.

I use 518 for the oil pump.
I use 574 for case halves. I have used it under the cylinders/shims (but prefer RTV for this location).
1211 I use for the fuel pump area and under the alt gasket. |

518 on the case halves, and intake manifolds here.
Ultra black on the cylinder bases, oil pump, etc.

518 is good even better than 574 on paper if my memory serves me right can break down with petrol contaminated engine oil were as 574 does not . That's why porsche prefers 574 on their air cooled engines and is an official OEM porsche part. 000-043-305-18-OEM |

Thanks for some input .
My application is drag . Heavy zinc oil and methanol fuel
Case should be quite rigid as there is 6 main web shuffle pins and 2 outer case dowels and fresh tight machined surfaces _________________ B.C's fastest street legal vw , June 2006 Hot VW's feature car 9.81 sec at 145.26mph.

My experience with curing/hardening sealants on split bearing housings has been....lets say..... mixed, therefore I don't use them for that kind of application, instead I use nonhardeneing sealant for split bearing housings, or modify the housings to use silicone in a groove.
But of course it depends on your objective.
The most tried and true method to prevent oil leaks (if that is your #1 goal) is to.... not put oil in it. (learned this from a show car expert)
That's a joke, but, proves the point. Consider your actual goals.

518 came out in 2016, its the latest formula loctite has made in that catagory of sealants. Higher temp rating then 574, which came out 20+ years prior to 518.
I would not use 1211, dirko, or any of the rtv based stuff. One tiny piece of any of those that hardens inside the case breaks off and goes in the oil passages. You have to use rays method of applying it super thin. To me its not worth it, just use 518 and get the higest temp resistance, best metal to metal bond for strength, its what its made for.
I like the 518 for case halves and use it on my swingaxle tube bearing flanges. _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg

BTW, I use 518 very often, several big tubes a year, I just don't use it for what I'm assuming you want to use it for. |

I had used 574 for case halves in the past, but gave up. Personally I didn't think it held up as long as I'd expect. For what I use now and love... well I can't say, because you said those were the only choice. EDIT Looked at this too early this AM. Threebond is basically the same thing as I've been using for case halves, Yamabond. I roll it on with an ink breyer, to date it is THE best sealant I've used on the case. I use it between the case and cylinders also

I've been using 1211 since 2017 on case halves and cylinder bases. I had some leakage at a couple cylinder bases this year, which I attribute to operator error. Never had a leak at the case. _________________ 1963 Manx copy

How is the cleanup when you pull the carbs for servicing? Last time I installed my manifolds I used higher heat white PTFE pipe dope. Seems to be working out well with regards to the seal but not sure how cleanup for re-install will go next time.
What is latest preferred head to dual port manifold goop assuming no paper gaskets? _________________ 1957 Oval rag

Quick shot of carb cleaner and a fresh razor blade takes it off easier than most cheap quality stuck paper gaskets.

Yup. At one point (for nearly 30 years) Permatex was owned by Loctite. It has since been split between Henkel (Loctite) and Illinois Tool Works (Permatex). They both make many similar and interchangeable formulations. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

here is some info on the loctite products i got from the tech line , very helpful.
- basically the 574 and 518 are the same except the 574 has a faster cure time
and may require use of primer depending on metals .
- 518 reformulated in 2016 , has built in primer , better gap filling
- both the 574 and 518 , oil and chemical tolerant temp -65 to over 300 deg ,the thinner the gap the faster the cure
- but ! there is another 5127/highly flexible gasket maker (blue) was designed for caterpillar, again same stuff just allows for more joint movement and expansion due to temp change , very good alternative .
- also the blue and red thread lockers 243 and 263 again latest formula with built in primers
and for your pipe threads the 567 same results latest with primer and oil and chemical and high temp
- cylinders the 5900 series black is good choice or the
threebond 1211
anyway good to know _________________ B.C's fastest street legal vw , June 2006 Hot VW's feature car 9.81 sec at 145.26mph.

The permatex 518, sleeve retainer, and red threadlocker are still older formulations, with near infinite shelf life.
The only product I prefer loctite brand is the 565 thread sealant. |
