Background: when I was nine or so, my father bought a yellow VW beetle. Being nine, I have no idea whether it was a classic or superbeetle. Nevertheless, I was impressed by its rear engine and forward trunk. He fairly quickly sold it on and replace it with a vehicle more suited for a six-foot-four driver.

Now, forty-five years later, we have acquired a 1973 Superbeetle. The ivory paint is in a sad state, revealing yellow underneath. When my father died in 2018, many sets of keys were lying around in various junk drawers, including the old VW-logo key that our owners' manual says is for the glovebox.

IT FITS. That old key from the yellow beetle in '79 fits the glovebox.

Now, I still live in the same house. It's POSSIBLE that this '73 Superbeetle (bought sixty miles away) could be the same one. Unlikely, but possible.

Did VW use a very small number of locksets for the glovebox? Does anyone know?

My 87 Scirocco key unlocked my 73 super doors, and the old key from my dad's 59 worked in my 66 bug.
