My transmission has a distinct whine in first gear, when it shifts into second it goes quiet.
A search here and elsewhere says it’s commonly caused by low fluid, but my fluid level is right in the middle of the min/max on the dipstick using the Bentley instructions.
I’ve driven another T3 auto, and don’t remember this noise… any other ideas what could cause it? _________________ ‘88 2wd Auto Westy project |

Well. That’s a relief! It sounds like straight-cut gears, like an old jeep? It doesn’t necessarily sound unhealthy to me, just unfamiliar.
Editing to add info I should have put in my original post:
I bought this transaxle used from a local VW specialist shop. It was pulled from a van that was being parted out due to rust and other issues not related to the transmission, although I don’t have any details of mileage, etc.
Before installing I pulled the pan and replaced the filter screen. There was nothing concerning, a bit of grunge on the filter but nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. The fluid was dark and murky but didn’t smell burnt or anything like that.
The transmission shifts smoothly and seems fine other than the noisy 1st gear. _________________ ‘88 2wd Auto Westy project |
