I think this is the biggest tire that will fit without a lift.

235/75/15 on some Passat steels.

I have been down in Mexico for a few weeks now and nearly every bus i come across has had a modified rear bumper. Mostly they tend to use stronger bumpers from other vehicles to keep their busses safe. Each year the number of busses running around down here seems to thin out, it's crazy how fast the ocean most can eat even new cars.

This front bumper was a little over the top but pretty resourceful.

Wow... them's some BIG tires!

I'm running 215/65/16's and I thought those were the biggest diameter / width set-up you could put on a non-lifted bus. The tire calculator site says your 235/75/15's are 1.88 inches taller and 3/4 of an inch wider than the geolanders I'm running. You must notice some rubbing at times, cause I rub just a wee little bit when I turn into or out of a steeply inclined driveway:

Offset matters for fitting wheels/tires. Check this out, ET45 Passat steelies with 235/75R15 vs your "effectively" ET29 (wheel+spacer) BMW steelies with 215/65R16:

So the 235/75/15's are pushing the tire more out? Or I should say the Passat rim.

The rim pushes the tire to the outside of the car allowing a wider tire which won't rub as much

all about running 0 offset 6" wheels with your 215/75-15s. Major difference in handling with wider offset for obvious reasons.

That visualization is for 235/75R15 on ET45 Passat vs. Nepenthe's 215/65R16 on ET47 BMW with 18MM adapters (effective ET29). If he had better offset he might be able to go bigger on his 16's without rubbing. If you look at 215/75R15 on the 15x6 ET45 Passat wheels vs. 185R14 on 14x5.5 ET39 Bus wheels, the extra width on the 15x6 is almost totally tucked inward (0.3MM more poke, pfft) because of the offset difference.

I'm gonna pick up a 235/75R15 at Pick & Pull to play with next weekend...

Some wheel spacers might get you where you need to be. Not sure how thick you can go without needing longer wheel studs, maybe 10mm. Studs need at least 6 revolutions to tighten securely.

How's your Bus performance all around with that setup? Do you have any rubbing anywhere?

I like that setup, those tires look burly on a Bus...I think I'm getting past the idea of needing hubcaps in favor of that stout look...I'd really like to know more about real world performance and drawbacks. And I presume that setup resolves the concern over adequate load rating for a loaded Westy.

Thanks for sharing.
