I just wax over the bare metal with regular car wax every few months when I do the rest of the bus. Has worked well for me in the past. I use Meguiars cleaner wax which cuts off any surface oxidation _________________ Barndoor Mafia

I have easy off and goof off. Right now iam using the easy off and its working good. I have to leave it on for atleast 5 min because its been painted 5 times and in some areas 6 and not in house paint. I have to go over it a few times but it will be worth it seeing that mango come through. Iam allready seeing it I'll post pics when iam done with the rear cargo door. easy off really works. aircraft stripper is too scary and the easy off doesn't smell as bad as goof off. |
i tried that, oven cleaner and goof off, I felt its a waste of time, id do jasco paint remover and steel wool, do one section at a time. |
Yeah, iam affraid to scratch the paint with the steel wool. The easy off is working pretty good but the goof off smells bad and it doesn't work as well. Maybe i'll try that jasco sometime if I run out of easy off. Thanks. Craig. |
000 or 0000 grade steel wool won't scratch the paint.
Debris pulled up from the surface trapped in the wool can scratch, though.
Just be cautious about keeping a clean side to the paint, and it will polish, not scratch. You will need lots and lots, though. |
I used 0000 steel wool and some kind of 409 degreaser on the OG dash paint on the DD and it came out sweet. I just kept a roll of paper towels handy and got all the gunk off before respaying and rebuffiing. _________________ Frank

I just did the "skim" treatment to my ride and it shines nice! I used graffiti remover, oven cleaner, jasco paint remover, and for the surface rust i use steel wool and clr. I left the jasco paint remover on too long and it went to bare metal, sucks but sh*@ happens _________________

I did as much as I could for the day and a half I was in Phoenix and we got it pretty good. After removing all the primer we threw down on the sides etc. Heres half way thru the process. Between Max, Jay and myself, we worked on it until 1 hour before they took me to the airport to fly home and I took these after pics right before I left.
before
During
and he will have to post the afters since they worked on it all day after I flew home to Texas.
**Edit** He just sent me these..

You have any pics? Just remember the warmer it is outside the faster those chemicals go to work on that paint so keep some fresh water or a running hose near by to neutralize the stripping process. It will take off good original paint. When in doubt use fine sand paper _________________ GFK

On his bus, we went to the local auto paint store with the color code for blue-white and turkis. They made us 6 rattle cans in single stage in 20 minutes.
Basically we only used paint where it was needed. Somebody previously thought it would be a good idea to hit every knick and scratch with a D.A. so it had burrs all over it.
after final color sand and buff, the colors blended pretty well for coming right out of the spray can like that.
Next he plans on restoring his bumpers the same way. Good for him. _________________ GFK

Just started doing some stripping on mine:
before
after
The OG paint was sanded real good prior to the primer. It is extremely thin. |
