Check out his posts. He has a whole thread on his bus. I am curious to see how your was lifted, as I will be doing this to my 68 Westy very soon. I will be running a 1776, so hopefully it will push it just fine. I can't believe that yours has 33's on it, that is friggin awesome. I am shooting for 205x15's, something with a BFG all terrain tread.
BTW, where in NE are you. I lived in Omaha for three years and never came across anything but old Chevy trucks. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Wow!! that's awesome! I can't believe that the thing even moves with a 1600 behind it. I know what the big horn is for, so when people flew by the previous owner (as he's creeping along at substandard speeds) he'd have a method of retaliation to everyone else honking and flipping him the bird.
I wouldn't stop at a 2.0l with that monster. looking into building an extreme t4 engine or just swaping to a 4.3l chevy. Something that rediculous (in a good way) needs something eqally rediculous to power it. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

It's different! Body appears in great shape.
For a rear sunroof 'port', you could probably get a rear power 'moonroof' mechanism off an old limo (assuming you're not looking at a pop-top or high top for a camping bed). Any way you do it you'll need to stiffen the roof structure around 'the hole'.
There are alternative gear boxes that might help off the line; the '83-'86 Vanagon diesel transaxle had fairly low gears IIRC. Your bellhousing will swap on to that trans. Folks who yank their diesel Vanagon's underwhelming factory 1.6L n.a., in favor of a 1.9 TD or TDI, frequently also go to a higher-geared transaxle for more 'relaxed' cruising rpm. That means they have a diesel transaxle, less its bellhousing, just lying around! (but they don't usually run 33" tires either!) Just one idea.
Have fun. _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I think he'd have a hard time putting an IRS tranny in place of his unit.
Why would anyone go swingaxle??? Still an awesome bus. _________________

oh MAN am I jealous. Please post up some more pics, esp of hte lift kit. I can't belive the 1600 can move that beast. those are some talll tires. I would look into a "anti-power pully" as an idea for that thing. _________________

seriously, the 1600 gets it around decent. Also, remember the complete camper interior is gutted so it is much lighter than stock. Not sure how it is going to act when I get 6 adults it but clutches are cheap and that motor can be out in like 15 minutes I would bet! |

Honestly i would put a type 4 2.0 with some headwork in it .....as you have the room without mods.......... the stock pancake will fit nicely........... no need to worry with sealing tins and such...... with the tranny it has now .....the 33" tires will pull nicely with the additional torque of the type 4 .... I have 32"s on mine and it rides like a dream......... i do have a much bigger motor though..
I have lift envy........ ...... I'd love to go higher on mine but not a fan of relocating the front and rear torsion housings.......... Maybe on a different bus.... just for fun.... _________________ Peace,

Actually he would do it the same way...... no difference putting a IRS in like this..... they do it in OZ all the time.... if he did go IRS he could get 3 more inches rear lift.... _________________ Peace,

With that much room from the torsion to the top of the body I see no need for the front grill. You could instead mount the radiator for subie power right in front of where the fan shroud currently sits. Does this thing have a swing axle trans?
And what's the deal with putting IRS in it? It's already got it!
Aren't the newer Vanny Trannies just a nosecone swap? They're side shift, but I thought they were basically a six rib 091 type of transmission.
Cool lift. Looks pretty sturdy. I wonder if it would benefit some triangulated bracing between each side of the torsion drops.
Is that Original Paint? If so, I'd wipe the black off (or repaint to match) and buff it out! Then procure and install an OG interior, mount some stock hubcaps and scare the piss out of people on the highway. _________________ Half Bus, Half Truck, What the _______? |
