Wow -- thanks Howesight. I never would have guessed those were for thermal control...
Got the case apart. It didn't give me too much trouble. The mating surfaces of the case halves look nice and I don't see anything really scary in there. The bearing at the end of the camshaft looks a little dry and crufty and one of the rods has what's obviously far too much play on the crank.
What else should I be looking at as I clean this up?

One of the bolt holes for the case (the hole at the bottom of the transmission-mount side) is very badly corroded. The aluminium is turned to almost 1/8" of white crud. All the other bolt holes look very nice.
Any idea what happened here? Should I drill this out cleanly and reinforce it with a steel insert?

WHAT TYPE OF COMPOUND SHOULD BE USED ON THE THICK RUBBER GASKET TO SEAL AGAINST THE HEAD AND FIT OVER THE CASE. I AM GETTING READY TO REASSEMBLE THE CASE. THIS IS A 1.9 L ENGINE

My engine kit provided reinzosil. It is similar to black silicone sealer.
