I have more info on it, it's buried in snow! Whee! Smile

But it is vin # 20-085142

Dove blue, with a wierd wierd front bumper (its' homemade, its something horribly ugly). I've spent some time and got the old manual pages printed out so that's cool (Obselete Air-Cooled Docum. Rocks!)

I would like to get a resto-log happening as well when time and weathe premits (I can't work in the cold at all).

For me, the rockers were the least of my wories. I already bought new inner and outter rockers because they are basically the same. Its the front floor, cargo floor and doors etc that if yours are beat down you will want to find correct ones. Also every part is out there but just high. Atleast being a panel you dont have to hunt for all the little barndoor trinkets, mouldings etc. Thats the good part about commercial BD's.
Im working on my first BD and its a deluxe so my path will be a bit rougher but I am not scared by anymeans. I say screw it because I'll keep the damn thing forever and build it piece by piece if I have to. In the mean time I just plan on getting it on the road even if its primered with only windshields, I dont even care. Im gonna roll that bitch out.
Do you have any pics?

Thats an excellent idea. Document it with lots of photos, write stuff down and dont throw anything away! Even if its complete junk, I throw it in a box in the corner. Be patient and draw up a game plan how and what you want to do first. Mine was so cut up that my biggest concern was doing the metal work on the sides and front clip then moving on from there.
How rusty is your bus? Your biggest worry will be dog legs if they are thrashed. If you need some, Patrick Hall in Oregon can build 3 piece BD doglegs from mid 56-62 doglegs. Im still trying to locate a good source on front cargo floor metal. I spoke to Kelly Brown at www.metwiz.com about making some but he said it will be a while before he makes them.
good luck and keep us posted.

Superskim, Can you give me Patrick Halls contact number/email? Also Mark Lapriore (sorry if the spellings wrong) Was intending to remake BD cab floor, but dont know if it happened. And Duncan at 'Eurobox' has some repair panels barndoor only.

You are correct, i just dont like lowered, fast buses, whats the point, in another thread on here sometime ago someone said he has an early bus, because it is old and slow, and it takes him back in time, and when he's driving it it slows his life down, cant remember who it was but it stuck in my mind. That's about how i feel, if you want to go fast buy a Porsche. Not knocking the custom bus scene in the UK, because lots more buses are on the road and they are good to see, just wish they were a little higher and slower

I noticed on Mark Merz bus, the optional hatch looks to have a stamping around the edge. Look closely. UZI is this hatch like yours?

Hi Skim,

I think I saw pictures of your BD, is that with the back hole cut out of it? (Sorry if it's the wrong one), but wow, that's a lot of work too. I know deluxe stuff is pretty hard to find on newer buses, but BD's wow.

Is the belt-trim the same for all deluxes? (I noticed that cut bus has it's beltline trim cut up too).

Metal: I have an old restoration book and they keep mentioning 'Barry Haselock' anyone hear of that name? Metal parts reproducer.

Rust: The BD has no cargo rust, but rockers rust, one dogleg needs a patch, don't know about rear corners or front yet. It's 4 hours away from here also buried in snow (yes, outside!). Why I ask?

PostPosted: Fri Mar 05, 2004 8:41 am    Post subject: more questions :) Reply with quote

Sorry, more questions..
1) Doglegs, I know they're different (slightly larger right?), and the top (where the seat is) is 'rolled'? Or is it also welded? Or is this a special type of weld? (I saw it on 'changes' on barndoor.dk)

2) Bumpers, I know they're big $$ etc, but what is the correct one for a 54 Panel? I know it has different flat area for the front lic. plate right? Or will any pressed one do (I know the answer is somehow no, but hoping it's yes!)

3) 16 inch wheels. I need one, is there anything special I should look for? Ie, split beetle is the same 16x3 wheel? or is it only special bus wheels?

4) Dash, oh man. I don't even want to talk about the dash. But, I need one Smile I know I will need the dash pod, but is there a special way to mount these? (Ie, do I just buy a pod and that's that, or is there other things I should try to get with it?)

Sorry for the newbish questions, I also have the old bently on order so maybe that will clarify things (though I don't know how it will answer my questions about matching parts from older/new years).

Can you describe the home made bumper? Just wondering... Smile

And good luck whatever you decide!

Answers:

1.they are the same on buses up till april 56(wolfburg) but any dogleg with the deep outer edge will look the same from the outside.

2. Bumpers again up till april 56 had the smaller numberplate gap , but the later ribbed bumber will also fit and look very similar.

3. beetle wheels are 16 by 3" and barndoor wheels are 16 by 3.5" , half an inch make all the differance (say the girls) (porsche are 3.25!)

4. the dash pod just bolts in, if your missing the whole thing try to buy a complete one, you need the last of the 3 differant one, see barndoor dk.

Very Happy

You're the best Keith! Smile That's two sets of questions answered! Thanks!

I almost bought 16x3" wheels, ouch, I'm such a newb.

Just saved me some cash! And I saw about 4 speedos + dashs, no I don't see any, I gotta search again.

The BD I have has 'added' side windows. Is this a big deal? I know they were added VERY long time ago, no leaks etc.

I have the metal to cover them up, should that be done, or is the old windows still fine? (Just want some opinions, to me it doesn't matter either way).
