anyone who tries to put themselves over as the king of anything is a lame ass! methinks that anyone who has to use the number of buses they have to forge their identity is a pretty transparent person. if all anyone can say about you is that you have alot of buses, then you lead a pretty empty life. i would rather have people say that i had a specific talent, was helpful, honest, etc. get me?

in its simplest terms, this whole topic is like you are all 7 years old, like this:

"my dad can beat up your dad"

"no he cant, my dad can beat up your dad, infinity"

more like "my wallet can beat up your wallet". i dont think anybody deserves respect just because they have the money to buy something.
people who share expertise and information free of charge and with zero attitude are the true kings. for example: tonny larsen's site has done more to help barndoor buses than any "collector" could hope to do.

I will jump in say that Mark Merz was very helpful when I needed to quickly i.d. some barndoor buses for some of my cover shots that Brooklands books used for an updated Bus road test book last year. Mark got me the correct info fast and never referred to himself as a "king", although other people who put me in touch with him may have used that term...

to my knowledge Charlie doesn't even own a barndoor

also, I have never heard Mark refer to himself as the barnoor king. I heard he got pissed at camberg when, in the big tent, they announced that it was the barndoor kings birthday. he stopped by camp serial killers shortly afterwards where the serial killers and the BDM sang him happy birthday.

I've never met most of the folks you are refering (which I hope to remedy at OCTO) and though I prefer my buses stock I have mucho respect for the BDM as they drive their buses. What's the point of being a "King" if you leave your prized stallion at home when you travel abroad?

I don't see anyone from the BDM claiming their right to rule. Shocked

First of all, We, the BDM, are not claiming SHIT! Like it was mentioned.....we are a club who are about the scene and are into BD's. Rule what??? FUCK that, King of BD's!! I would NEVER claim that title or who does? And I am good buddies with M & M, Marky Merz, and he always laughs or says "fuck that" when being referred to as the BD King! There are guys out there that are very low key and have tons of BD's & parts, but they are not claiming their rule. There are alot of guys out there with lots of knowledge about these rare birds. If your gonna talk about the head honchos, I would pick three guys.........CHUCK D, TONNY LARSEN and another guy who I will not mention his name because it gets ticked very easily. But these guys have been around for a long time! Most of the guys being referred have not been around as long as these guys! I myself have been around the VW scene for at least 25 years and so have these guys. These guys have been collecting VIN #'s back in the day with Walters, Woods............Yeah, CHUCK D (Charlie Hamil) doesn't own a Barndoor presently, but I bet he's owned several BD's before most of us! TONNY, well what can you say about him!!!! He's the man! This guy has been into BD's since the early eighties, that I know of. And I forgot one guy, the guy who got me into this mess...........BBJ aka George Schmidt. Now you wanna talk about a very low key guy with alot of crazy rare BD stuff!!!!! And if you ask most of these guys where they get their information from.............most of them will say Chuck D! But I am not down with a Barndoor King. Who was the Jack Ass who started that??? If you want to know who the pioneer of this scene is.......My hat goes off to CHUCK D. I remember this guy telling me about 10 years ago that BD's one day will rule the VW scene. Everyone will want one! Shit, it happend!

And as far as the BDM goes............we are just a group of guys who drive our BD's, no matter what condition they are in!! And we are all about the scene. Not having the fatest wallet, shiniest paint or any of that other stuff. And like Krissy Montesanti mentioned about "hierarch is going to be set up medieval style" will I would like to knight myself as the town thug!

And JF, fired from what? Don't make me throw down my Gardner Light!
And why did this character start this thread and bail out???

38 more days and counting for the BDM-OOC-BBQ!!!!!!!!!!!

I had some work done by Charlie in the past and at the time I think he had an 1950 Panel. If I'm not mistaken it was one of the oldest buses. But I'm sure someone else knows more of this than I.

Ed's 1950 Panel is the oldest Bus in the United States and the 4th oldest Bus in the world.
