Where did you get that new exhaust? I'm thinking about getting a stock one for mine as well. Thanks in advance. |
I got it from one of the last remaining aircooled VW specialists in the area, Hicks VW Service in Durham, great guys.
After replacing the hatch seal, imagine my disappointment to discover that there was still some water ingress.
It looks like I’ll need to source a new seal for the rear window.
Not having a new seal for that, I turned my attention to one that I did have a seal for, the driver side rear window. One of the extras that came with the bus was a passenger side fixed window, complete with a new gasket.
Since the previous owner had already cut the old gasket away…
I’m impressed that this thing hadn’t fallen out already.
I stripped out gasket & yanked the glass out.
And the removed the vent wing…
After cleaning up the aperture, I zipped some paracord into the gasket. Since I couldn’t find my favorite Bic pen barrel, I repurposed the cap off a tube of RTV and threaded the cordage through it.
And wedged it into the gasket & pulled it around.
Once in, I positioned the assembly into the opening, pushed it into place, & began to pull the window in.
(I guess I shoulda removed the last bits of the headliner. )
Here we are after a quick cleaning.

Intent on trying to get some way of keeping track of fuel level, I started with soaking a seized instrument cluster that I had laying around from the Crusty Pig.
Obviously, I didn’t want to soak the whole cluster, but I also wasn’t interested in dismantling the whole thing, so I lopped the top off a oil bottle & filled it with ATF.
And balanced the cluster on it to let the drive mechanism soak overnight.
Once freed up, I lubed the rest of the drive gears & axles and began to dismantle the cluster while still in the vehicle in hopes of just swapping out the speedometer head.
Once inside, things were a lot worse than anticipated.
This cluster obviously sat out in the elements for some time.
The fuel gauge cluster took the brunt of it.
In the midst of doing the swap, the bottom fell out of the skies, so I failed to get more pics, but I swapped the fuel gauge pod, reassembled it all, & drove it home.

Carrying on with my quest to stem the flow of water into the cabin, I opted to replace the slider door seal.
Using my handy homemade tool, I chiseled the old seal out & cleaned out the groove.
And began tucking the new Wolfsburg West seal into place.

Today I tackled the passenger side ball joints. While disassembling everything, I checked the tie rod ends, and, well….
Link
Sorry, totally screwed up & took video the wrong direction.
Looks like I need to score some of those too.
Anyway, after separating the upper ball joint from the spindle…

Here we are with new ball joints pressed in.

Today I repeated yesterday's endeavors & the driver side was pretty much the same.

Press old ball joint out…
Press new one in…
Rinse & repeat…
Install spindle.
Thread speedometer cable through & install clip.
And admire someone’s choice of tow hook placement…

Woohoo!
Gone are the creaks, squeaks, groans, clunks, & knocks (from the bus anyway.).
And today, my new tie rods arrived, so, I just had to tackle that.
Out with the old…
And in with the new.
I used the old castle nuts to lock the ball joints into their respective holes…
And then backed them off & ran the nylock nuts back on
Unfortunately, I forgot to order two right side tie rods, so I still have a fixed length driver side one. Since the original ones were so bent, I needed to re-center the steering wheel. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Steering wheel.
The drag link was previously replaced & it’s length matched to the original that came out, & since the new STRAIGHT fixed length driver side pretty much dictates correct center, I just centered the steering wheel (almost 90°).
With the new ball joints, tie rod ends & center link, the friction in the steering is tight enough, and while the steering box is not sloppy, it’s just loose enough, that the “center” index is not felt as of yet.
While the wheels are centered, the pitman arm is straight up & down.
One thing at a time, I’ll improve & repair as I enjoy it daily. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

How hard of a task is this? Mine are pretty bent. ALso what do you mean by ordering 2 right side rods? _________________ Rich

This is pretty easy & doesn’t really require a jack, unless your bus is lowered.
You can probably do this in 30-60 minutes.
All you need is a 19mm wrench, two 13mm wrenches (to tighten the tie rod clamps.), a BFH (big friggin hammer), and maybe a “pickle fork” or a tie rod separator ( https://www.autozone.com/shop-and-garage-tools/tie...src=aw.ds) to pop the tie rods out of the spindle/steering arm.
As to the two right side tie rods, the left side has the tie rod ends swaged (crimped) into place & is therefore non-adjustable, you can see this on the tie rod on the left…
the right one has clamps that tighten the tie rod down on the threaded tie rod ends.
I got mine through Rock Auto for $28 each.
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/volkswagen,196...uter),7425
Replacing it with a passenger side tie rod gives you more adjustability.
While you’re at it, go ahead & score a new drag link/center link, it’s only another $22.
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/volkswagen,196...+link,7276
They do have a Mehle for $55-ish if you’re concerned about quality.
Yes, they’re cheap, yes, they’re probably Chinese, but they’re a hell of a lot better than what I removed from the bus. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

After all of the front end work, I made an appointment with a local Firestone to get their lifetime alignment.
Of course, this caused all sorts of issues.
Their Hunter digital alignment machine had no software to support a 1969 Bus. So I told them to look it up as a 1978, they had specs for this.
Next, the machine required a VIN, but it didn’t recognize one that only consisted of 9 digits.
After that got sorted, no one knew how to drive it…. Dammit, do I have to do everything?!?
Short answer, yes.
No one knew how to adjust the camber angle, so I got to do that too.
Once that was done, their tech couldn’t figure out how to align it with only one adjustable tie rod, so I grabbed the driver side tire & pointed it to the center of the required field, & told him to adjust the passenger side to spec.
With the alignment completed, the whole process began again when trying to enter the vehicle into their system to bill it out. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

With new ball joints pressed in, I was coerced into trying to tidy up the front suspension & knock off all of the caked on crust.
Of course, one thing leads to another, & down the rabbit hole I went. Using a torch to soften the old paint, I began buffing it off with a wire brush.
Someone obviously had the upper trailing arm off at some point & had a difficult time getting it back in.
Sorry, I zoned out & forgot to take pics of the shock tower & trailing arms in bare metal.
And finally gave it a quick coat of fresh black paint.
That doesn’t look out of place at all. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

After installing the factory oil bath air cleaner & stock style muffler, the beast was much quieter. Unfortunately, with the drone of the engine significantly reduced, the tires are now the main source of noise.
With the intake & exhaust being significantly more restrictive, I noticed that the power band had just tipped out of being happy with the larger tires & the engine was unable to maintain speed on hills when cruising at 45/50.
Sooo…. I neutered the bus.
It’s sooo much quieter now. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Yeah…. Sorry for the rug pull.
I’ll contribute the increased road noise to several factors, aside from the aggressive tread pattern, the front tires were already showing signs of scalloping, mostly due to the high likelihood of the front end being severely out of alignment before I purchased the bus, and then putting, would you believe somewhere between 9,000 & 10,000 miles already?!?
In addition to this, the fact that one sits immediately on top of the tires, instead of being nestled between the front & the rear.
However, besides the substantial decrease in noise levels, I already have seen at least a 20% increase in fuel economy.
Today I chipped away at more of the front beam clean up.
And gave it a fresh protective layer.

I do have a couple of those, & they do work great removing rust & scale. However, they are far too aggressive (& noisy) for just removing crud & old paint. If you look closely at the pics, you can still see the bluing from the factory welds after I stripped the original paint off.
This morning, I got fuel for the first time since the tire swap & I have gone from 16-ish mpg to just over 24mpg…. I wish I had just went with those on the grand tour, especially when refilling in California.
After filling up, I once again dug out some of the parts that were supplied by the previous owner.
While initially trying to save the newish window gasket, I finally cut it & removed the driver side middle window.
After wrapping one of his new gaskets around a slider window that he also sourced & stuffed it into the hole.
And pulled it in.
You can see the staining of the water leakage from the vent wing.
And there it is.
Now, if only I can resist the temptation of installing the damned Riviera turret top that also came with the bus. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Since the oppressive heat seems to have broken, & the mornings starting to be cool, I decided to begin the process of getting the heating system working again.
During my trip across country, I determined that this bus had been picked up by a forklift at some point in its life. While I had sorta straightened the clutch tube, the passenger side heater cable tube was crushed beyond just a simple tweaking.
So I commenced to lopping out the worst of it.
With that out of the way, I straightened the ends out.
And then addressed the crossmember.
And scabbed a piece of 3/8” fuel line in place.
While under there, I unwrapped the tape hiding what was left of the heat tube.
After gingerly grinding away at the weld, I locked onto the remains of the tube with my slide hammer.
And coaxed it out of the crossmember.
Since I had not yet installed this heat tube in my ‘64, I checked to see how it fit.

With a few minutes to spare, I extracted the remains of the rear portion of the heater tube.

In the interest of preserving the original crossmembers, and since there were now a couple decent access holes, I blew out decades of accumulated dust & dirt out of the crossmembers.
Link
After that, I gave the inside of the box sections several good squirts of Ospho.
