Dasbliiwagon,
That is interesting!!! I am still contemplating what to do. I will look into that and see if I can find some. I assume they can still be bought. I'm hoping they also give the comparison.
Thanks!

A quick search finds AA Performance, Jbugs, and Dunebuggywarehouse has them available.

So, Wagon18, are those drums acquirable?
I'm sorry, I'm just trying to understand. I totally appreciate your time and help!!
Are the '72 onward still wide five? (which is the wheels I have on it.)

Yes, all things have 5 lug wheels with LK 5 x 205 mm.
I´m thinking about one used drum, just for testing at first.
Find someone with a IRS thing, have a look, evtl. take one rear wheel off and do some measuring.
If it´s not enough, the shorter torsion bars and spring plates can do the rest.

Just found adds with pics for the two versions of used rear Thing drums, already located in the USA. You need, can use the version with the straight ribs (only) plug and play.

Just curious here... any chance the early IRS Bus drums are the same as the IRS Thing drums? I am running '68 Bus drums on the rear of my rail but I also have the Bus trailing arms, axles and wheel bearings so don't know if the splines in the drums are the same or not.

That´s something different!
From Aug 63 onwards, the Bus has the bigger and longer splines, shaft diameter 35 mm, as well as a 46 mm nut for the brake drums.
The Thing, both models, swing axle and IRS have the thinner 30 mm shafts and splines, brake diameter allways only 230 mm and allways the small 36 mm nut.

Rear Bus drums with LK 5 x 205 mm till 7´70:
it´s not a question of IRS or swing axle.
From 8´63 to 7´70 there was the same size of brake shoes, brake 250 x 45 mm, shaft 35 mm, nut 46 mm. (for T1 with swing axle and T2 with IRS)

Wagen19, so to be clear, the drums just need to be "straight spoked". A person raised another question on another site about the stub axle. I'm assuming that is not an issue but, it would seem that it needs to be longer?? Just making sure.
I TOTALLY appreciate ALL the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I found these.

Moores has these:

A bit saltier.

These drums seem correct for IRS Thing with original 230 x 40 mm brake, so fitting on your car. (but not knowing the Taiwan quality)
As long you have a stock IRS trailing arm with stub axle from Beetle, Type 3 or Thing with a 230 x 40 mm brake, it fits plug and play.
(issues with IRS thing drums you only can get with some swing axle cars pre 8´67.
IRS came 8´67, model 68 and at the same time the new 230 x 40 mm rear brake with longer splines also for type 1.
To cool down your nervs, you can test fit a 68 onwards Beetle 4 lug drum. If it fits your axle stub and braking system, a IRS Thing drum will fit too!

But what I don´t know is, what kind of drum and brake you have actually installed. (numbers and pics?)

Get original Thing drums - the Asian drums are questionable
regarding quality.

Only interested, if the "problems" are solved meanwhile and if so, with what parts or methods.
Thanks
