Came here to post what jlrftype7 posted (looks familiar, has my greasy thumbprint on the scanned page!).
But follow this link for a step-by-step guide to removing the automatic transaxle.

Update:
I hand pumped out the transmission fluid it was very dark and smelt burnt.
I put in 2ltrs of new and checked. Sadly I was low so didn't have any new and hand to put some old back in as it hardly fully drained and wanted to see if it was ok or not.
Lot the level right and took it out on a little test. I drove it about 10 miles and all good, then tried a big hill down and up. Still seems ok.
I will have to drive more to get my confidence up but fingers crossed it it's not a transmission issue. |

undo the nut holding the fill tube into the pan, drain it all out, especially if it's burnt, the more you get out the better IMHO, l'd lift the opposite side of the van a little, to get the most out.
even better, take it off, take off the pan, change the filter.
parts are here

Since you have changed some of the fluid, get yourself a replacement filter screen and enough fluid to do a drain and fill. Have a tubing wrench and others tools ready including shop towels and drain pan, drive until the tranny is nice and hot, and then drive the right tires up on a curb. This should give you plenty of clearance underneath and will help it drain well. Loosen the fill tube and pull it aside (there is a hidden bracket at the upper end of the tube) and pull the pan and clean the pan and old screen well, but if the old screen is damaged go ahead and use the new one. Refill with maybe a 1/2 quart less than the book recommends and then check and adjust the level once the ATF is hot. |

Thanks for all the info and tips. Really appreciated.
I will get the van home and give it a good around service.
On the drive out last night, no leaks! |

I've just ordered the kit to do the water jacket on one side. I'm going to attempt it without removing the engine. Then if all goes well, take it for a spin and dump the transmission fluid , change the sum gaskey and filter. Refill with as much as possible, then see what happens.
I did notice the other day when crawling underneath, there is a crack in the transmitter housing, but not service agfecting |

Lower bolt area of the Cast Iron Final Drive/Bell Housing? Yes..... seems to happen too often.
One of mine is a hairline, the cast iron Final Drive section is a wider spread crack, but that one is off the vehicle for now- so, maybe it gets welded at some point... _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....
