You can afford a bus now, but it’s going to have a few holes in it and you’re going to be nursing some scratches and bites and poison ivy rashes when you’re done dragging in out of the God forsaken spot it’s been sitting in for the last 40 to 50 years.

I just found another 65 11 window in an overgrown lot, found due to a chance encounter and conversation. It’s rough but it can be saved and if I can get it for the right price it will come live with me. I’ll never be able to restore it for a profit but I can do it. In the long run it’s the most expensive way to get a bus but you spread the investment over years and you don’t finance it a it becomes negative wealth every month. But there is an alternative way to get into the business world.

I'm one of those guys who needs a project all the time. I can't sit still. My dad is the same way. Couching is a waste of time unless its educational or you're physically ill.

I bought a VW as a covid project. Its my first one. Having rebuilt the entire car over the past 7yrs, one might say I'm an air-cooled guy now. I'm cool with that.

My Bug is keeping me off a motorcycle. My wife and daughter are happy about that.

Nearly all my free time when not enjoying family time or working is spent in the garage. Usually working on Bandit.

My VW has kept me sane, which is good for the general public's sake.

Its also made me a better mechanic, fabricator, and machinist.

I reconnected with an old friend. Without the VW that probably wouldn't have happened.

As much as its pissed me off and frustrated me, I'm grateful for my VW. It'll be difficult if I ever have to part ways with it.

Money can't buy happiness but it can buy a VW.

I still have the 69 Bus because I like driving it. So that is fun.
This Bus we have had for well over 20 years. It cost $1500. It was complete (but not reassembled) ran and stopped.
It was vandalized last year. As part of the insurance claim the adjustor classified the condition as "poor". As we discussed the issue of whether to repair or total it, I asked what valuation they were working with. They said $18,400. Wow. Way over its actual worth, but still wow. It was worth it to have Robbie (Airschooled) replace the engine and repair the damage.
So I have a bad looking bus with a bright, shiny and new engine.
I was tired of the rust, the bad paint, maintenance, the lack of a/c, bad brakes, the lack of almost any safety equipment, etc. I was leaning towards selling it, but that decision would take two votes in the family.
I ran the total costs to do a cosmetic paint job, new tires, disc brakes, upholstery, etc. Money is not the issue.
The vote on selling was 1-1.
So now I am doing that cosmetic paint job, getting rims and tires and brakes and all the other little details done. I do not care what anyone's perceived value is or what anyone thinks of the Bus. We like having it.
I guess that makes me an enthusiast.

Ah, yes. Been riding for over 50 years. Truth be told... not much lately.

When I was a little kid parents told me everyone they knew who rides has been down. Sure enough everyone I ride with has been down.

I been down more times than I care to count. Can't dodge bullets forever.

Can't always dodge Grandma on her way to Market Basket. She's a crafty old bird. She'll put tire tracks over my torso and say,

"I didn't see you."

Every parent should buy their kid a helmet. Then body armor, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist braces. Or... how 'bout this? Star Wars style plastic body armor, blue for boys, pink for girls, purple for undecided and Barney fans.

I'm considering branching out. I'm lookin' at a Subaru 360. I'd rather have an Isetta except those are schtupid expensive.

Here's a story. I got hit in a crosswalk as a pedestrian a summer or so ago. Ended up with my lips against the guy's windshield. To make a long story short, he said,

"I didn't see you."

and boogied. I didn't get his plate number.

He was parked next to me at Market Basket the other day. That's the guy! I got a good look at him when my lips were pressed against his windshield.

Not much I can do about it after all this time. I gave him the ol' Hairy Eyeball. He knows.

About 30 years ago I bought a Honda 90 trail to ride back and forth to work. Worked a charm 8 months of the year for 3 years, 90 mpg in town. Then I got T boned, lying in the hospital emergency the doctor asked "How long have you been riding?"

"Three years."

"You were a year overdue to see us then."

Back and forth to work is the highest risk of collision in any vehicle it turns out. I still ride occasionally but just for pleasure and mostly back trails in the country. Not on the Honda, it went for scrap unfortunately.

As far as the original question, I thought long and hard about the money side and I am hard pressed to think of any car or truck that I have gained money on in my life! I suppose maybe my '69 Bus... bought it for $1100 in about '82 and sold it for $2500 three years ago. That hardly keeps up with inflation.

I've had maybe a dozen CT90s over the years. Last one I had I picked up at a junkyard. I was driving a '78 Civic at the time. Anyone remember 13" tires? Tiny car, tiny tires.

I was able to muscle one Honda up on to the roof of the other. It looked like I just bagged a moose.

I told my fiduciary I was raised "low income" which is partly why I got into VWs rather than more costly alternatives. Must be nice bein' able to piss money willy- nilly in all directions. Still, $10k for a nice Bug not to mention the silly prices people are asking for Busses is just too damn much money. I'm an enthusiast not a sucker. I paid $100 for my best Bug, my old '67. Of course that was a long time ago. I've had VWs that simply followed me home. That would be the '74 from my buddy who committed suicide. That makes paperwork a bit of a hassle. No worries! I used to back road it to work on his expired tags.

I looked at a '69 project yesterday. I'll just as soon tow home a project. I may never finish it but the price of admission is attractive...

I see a lot of "enthusiasts" who have far more enthusiasm than they have skill. They'll buy every conceivable part for their project and then realize the can't paint, they can't weld and they don't own any wrenches. There's a semi- local guy getting out (from under) getting out of his Bug project for $10k asking. That seems to be a princely sum for a pile of parts. Even though VW prices are getting more and more ridiculous I should be able to buy a running driving VW for $10k Imagine! $10k and I have to re- install the transaxle and the beam, put the body back on the pan and then tow it back to my secret laboratory.

Maybe that's why I used to have extraordinary enthusiasm and I now have extraordinary lack of enthusiasm.

"Two weekends to take it completely apart, 20 years to put it back together!"

"Life happens."

Wow! I really did sell that Bus too cheap! The guy replaced the soft brake lines, tires and fuel pump then he drove it home 12 hours, through the mountain passes, in January in the dead of winter!

Aw well! At least it is not sitting here rotting away.

The internet has conflated efficient dispersal of information as a surrogate for expertise. Running out and buying all the parts then thinking you can YouTube your way to a restoration is a common malady.

You need to spend the hours learning how to take stuff off without breaking things, deal with rusted fasteners, and all that stuff.

You dont need a torque wrench for your first 3 years of mechanicing.

Only if you limit your first 3 years to bodywork!

You need a torque wrench the moment you mess with the motor. It's useful elsewhere. For example it seems to be fairly common to torque the heads on old dual ports as if they're on a cast iron Chevy. 8mm is supposed to be 17 ft/lbs, 10mm around 25. I just dismantled an old AE dual port. Breakaway torque had to be over 85 ft/lbs. I used my 1/2" breaker bar. My usual 3/8" ratchet felt a little wimpy.

I used to use the old torsion beam type torque wench my old man used on his Bug. I messed up the old tool back when I was young and dumb. It was U.S. Craftsman back when Craftsman tools were guaranteed for the life of the owner not the life of the tool. Sears swapped it for a shiny new (back then) micrometer adjust I still use.

The other fun one recently... I anticipated the usual cussing and hammering to remove a gland nut. I tossed the short block in the Tacoma. My buddy runs his shop air at 200psi and uses Snap- On rattle guns 'cuz those are guaranteed. It took one bzzzip to knock off the gland nut. Loading and unloding the engine was the hard part.
