I have had zero issues carrying two lightweight personal watercraft (either one inflatable, one standard paddleboard or one of the paddleboards and a sit-on top kayak) for road trips of 5-6 hours.
Around town, I've had 4 boards on there multiple times.
I would never, ever, never, not ever try to lift the roof with a load on it. If I do every put a solar panel up there, it will be flexible one I can glue down(and will be very light). I'll probably just stick with a suitcase panel.
When it's down using the gutter mounts, the roof is resting on the van and the load is being shared by the van. I don't agree with go-west mounts that have all the weight on the roof vs. the sides, but that's just me. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. Thanks for posting this. It was my project yesterday (along with replacing the starter). I’d likely have figured it out but it was nice to not have to.
One note: I started with a carriage bolt. That released enough tension to remove the belt, but not reinstall. I had to find one with more threads and then it was easy. (I won’t admit how long it took me to figure that out).

New skill added to the toolkit:
Replaced the Serpentine Belt on the 2002 EVC today -- a very simple and easy job. I had noticed that it had a few small cracks when I was under there doing maintenance last month, so I ordered a Continental belt. The Belly Pan must be removed.
Purchased an M8 x 1.25 x 80mm bolt from ACE for a couple bucks, which was needed to thread into the nose/frront end of tensioner (from up above with hood open). Screwing the bolt in gradually releases tension on the pulley, so that you can slip the belt off. The new belt was tighter obviously so I had to screw the bolt in a bit more to fit it on. Thankfully the tensioner sets tension on the belt automatically. I had also purchased a new pulley from Bus Depot, but when I spun the old pulled (OEM I think) it felt and sounded good, so I held off on replacing it (I'm sure one of the other vans will need it).
Didn't take a photo of the new belt, but I had snapped one of the old belt for reference and I now realize it runs in the shape of an Hour Glass.

With the 2002 EVC slated to transition back out to the western U.S. in a couple of weeks finally, I'm taking care of a few small items that have been on my ToDo list. One is to install grommets into the Lloyds 1-Piece Front Cabin floor mat (purchased through EuroCampers I think?? ... a few of the typical vendors market them).
Anyways, the Lloyds mats are great but they come with odd tie-down strips that don't function at all with the stock OEM VW floor mat posts.
Used a socket and a torch to bore through the mat in spots that line up with the OEM VW posts that are already in the cabin carpet -- then installed aftermarket 2-piece grommets in the holes. Now the mat sits nice and flat and won't move. If you have a 1997 or prior van that didn't come with posts, you can get screw in posts as part of a package with grommets.

We used a Hoover Power Scrubber to clean the cloth front seats.
The PO must have had a big dog the seats were pretty funky
they smell a lot better now. _________________ '57 type 1 Blackberry
