Yes, it's a mig setup, pretty simple really. It's 1/2" galvanized conduit... This is a practice run that's going very well. I don't plan on using this one, just making sure I can do it. The correct tubing is higher quality steel, heavier and not galvanized. I guess I need to build some various dies or bucks to bend different shapes, all I have now is a conduit bender. The major problem I'm having now is....... I sold my Bus! Hope this fits... A good friend has a couple Buses just a mile away Embarassed I borrowed a nice quality pipe notcher from a friends as well, so far a bench grinder and custom built attachment for my drill press was making due... This is fun work!

I dont want to start a new thread so ill ask here. I know of a rack that has wood ribs for the bottom, metal frame, and is held on the roof via suction cps and small straps with hooks on them that eitehr hook on the gutters or the door. Any info on this and where to get spare parts? Thanks.

I'm not sure if the Devon camping conversions company actually manufactured the roof rack but you could hire a caravette camper from them in 1959 and the rack and awning was an additional 30 shillings.

It could be assumed that the Devon works may have subcontracted the manufacture of such racks and awnings.

Note from the pictures of the rack on my later Devon Caravette that the rack clamping straps interfere with the awning attachment rail.
On the earlier example the awning apears to interface with the rack.

Thanks for the info on the MIG.

I was going to say that I thought that there was a problem welding on galvanized metal.

those fumes are pretty toxic once you start burning them.

Anybody know anything about this rack? It's a full length rack that once had wood slats screwed to the cross-bars (the screws are still there, but obviously the wood is long gone). The original owner said that it was purchased new in France and shipped over here on the bus that his family purchased new in Germany. It's very "boxy" and supposedly clears the sunroof on a deluxe. There are no markings that I can find on this rusty beast.

I've got one...was thinking of cutting it up and tossing it in the trash. No clamps, but I now see what the clamps look like. Mine is a 1/3 length rack. Mines for sale.

The problem with welding galvanized is that it is ZINC. to much zinc will make you feel like you have the flue and make you sick to your stomach. One thing you can do to help you is drink whole milk the calcium in milk will counteract the zinc and not make you as sick. plus put on a mask.

Just my two cent's
PS
How is it going irievolks

I picked up this roof rack in Edmonton a while back - someone said they think it was altered .. but it sure doesn't look like that to me ... anyone know why it would have that bow at the front - and why the vertical pieces would extend higher than the rest of the rack ... and who made it?

What kind of rack is this? Looks like an HWE with longer legs welded on, without the correct clamps.
