No. What does the other side look like?

Here is the latest update on my rear axle re-seal and brake job. First is an image of the other side of that seal I pressed for the right side bearing cover.

In my usual fashion, I work too fast to stop and take a lot of photos but this is where I am now.

My process included stripping and repainting my backing plates. After they dried, I sanded down the center sections to make it flat as possible. I cleaned the bearing covers and blew out the weep holes, pressed in the seals. I used a tiny bit of tranny fluid to lubricate them (is that ok?). Then I filed down the surfaces of the bearing covers and the RGBs. I put Permatex High Tack gasket sealant on all sides of the 4 gaskets (2 per side) then used some cut off studs to line up the bearing covers. I taped the axles and slid the O-rings on, then slid the bearing covers with the spacers in place on and bolted them down. I polished up the spacers and they felt really smooth. Torqued them to 43 ft lbs in a cross hatch pattern. Seems like it looks pretty good to me.

Taking a break and will come back to it this weekend.

Is there a weep hole on the RGBs I need to make sure is clear? I can't find it.

Looks perfecto to me. The weep hole is on the backing plate. Lube for the seals is fine.

Ok I have a dumb question, search has brought be to this thread so I'm hoping someone can help. Over Thanksgiving my dad and I removed the rear brake drums off my early 67 bus so he could have them turned. I believe it's a big nut style, it took a 46mm wrench. Anyway, he's trying to put them back on and found this washer that neither of us remembered removing:

Would it go onto the axle before or after the drum? He says it's similar to the generator pulley adjustment shims. None of our reference books mention it. His 59 bug has a washer between the drum and castellated nut, my 66 bug does not.

It does not belong to a Big Nut 46mm set up.

Hey y'all, has anyone ever had the seal cover absolutely refuse to come free? I've removed the 4 bolts on the cover, plus the upper two and lower one from the backing plate of my big nut (46mm). I am 100% stumped as to what I am missing. Thanks!

Probably just stuck with glue. Try pulling on the backing plate to work it off

I tried that too. I tapped on the backing plate, pulled it, tried wedging the plate off with shims.... I'm not sure what is next

I just got it. I really had to wedge pry that thing off and even then the seal stayed on the spacer. The seal doesn't look like the WW replacement that I purchased--it has exposed metal on the side that faces out. I'm wondering but not sure if incorrect parts were used making it so difficult to remove.

Next up, how in the heck do you get the spacer off the axle? I've sprayed it with some PB blaster but so far it isn't moving and I don't want to pry and ruin this one.

Wolfsburg west sells early and late spacers. I bought them before, just polished the seal edges up good first

I've used heat and/or a pair of channel-lock pliers with padding in the jaws (folded up paper shop towel). Grip the spacer on the widest part of the flange and wiggle it back and forth. The circumference of the flange isn't part of the sealing surface, the circumference of the narrow part of the spacer is part of the seal though, so don't grip that.

It may be stuck to the splines with rust, but it may just be the o-ring has turned to goo and is holding it in place.

Please can someone direct me to a good small-nut transmission photo tutorial?
It’s for a ‘55 Barndoor.

I don't know of any tutorial, but I have done it and it is my least favorite Rear axle seal setup. The big O-ring seals against four separate pieces of metal. Make sure they are all clean and smooth.

Thanks Lind
Are you referring to part #6 (“gasket”)?

Here’s the installation guide from the 1954 VW Workshop Manual:

Note how there are no paper gaskets (item 1 above) on the Barndoor set-up
And no Oil Deflector (item 10 above).

Barndoor:

The Barndoor set-up has that rubber ring gasket (item 6).

Does anyone know off hand if the '63 1500 option 1-ton little big nut is set up like the big nut or like the small nut as far as what pieces of the seal kit to use and not use?

I know it has small nut axles but I believe the bearing caps are specific to the transaxle.

One ton '63 bearing cap is like small nut, but with an A at end of part number. It also take an outer spacer. Here are some photos....

2 on left, '63 one ton, 3/4 ton and big nut on right. The difference, '63 one ton have the e brake cable holder at top. The spacer with notches in it is not original, it was made by some one.

I have the one on the left and trying to fit the oil seal with no luck. pretty sure its the wrong size. no amount of pressing will get it in. Are there 2 different sizes of seals that can be found?

Hi, Glad that I found this thread. My 65 one ton, big nut axles has been dripping oil onto the wheels for some time now. I've had it to 2 different guys in the past and still drips.
I've been painting the underside this fall and it's up on jackstands, with the wheels pulled off. So now is the time for me to give it a try.
Is the a better seal kit to buy? When I restored it 23 years ago ,I dealt with Ronnies old volks home in Havasue city Ariz.I'll give him a call this week and see if he still remembers me
So long for now....John

When placing your WW order you may want to order the axle spacers as well. If you have the big nut axles then you will want the spacers with the shoulder like the one on the right.

The spacer outside diameter serves as a sealing surface. Over the years the seal will cut a groove into the surface and new seals will generally continue to leak. Both of these spacers, small nut and big nut show wear grooves.

Axle spacers-Check. Maybe that is the reason it continues to leak after new kits have been installed. Thanks 69ac...john
