It sounds like you don't have there push rod adjusted properly. If the master cylinder isn't allowed to return all the way it blocks a fill port. It is 1mm of play at the pedal. That equates to 1/2 a cunt hair at the end of the rod.
That's where I would start looking....
You asked how to measure:
I crawl under the bus and grab the brake pedal arm and move it manually. You can then see where all the slop and movements are. The push rod is set with a lock nut. Crack it free and screw it in while moving the brake pedal arm. You will see/feel really fast if its set properly or not. It should not touch the plunger in the MC while at rest.

Given the age of these buses, I'd assume one would have to factor in the coarseness that comes with age. |

Yes, sir, stock 14". No sir, no fitment issues at all.
I am curious if I should put a bit of loctite on the studs. When I remove the lug nuts, they either come out or turn to be loose. Thoughts? |

I'm pretty sure you have that wrong, I think it's 1mm at the pushrod. |
I stand corrected. It is 1mm clearance between pushrod and piston.

The pedal is exactly what I’d hoped for. The $64,000 question is what will the pedal be like once it’s on the ground and I start to drive it. I’m getting real used to disappointment, but for the moment, confidence is high. |

| FWIW, I had terrible luck bleeding my brakes until I did it with the front end raised about a foot. Read that trick on some non VW forum and it worked great. |

It worked for me as well. I finally got to drive it on Friday and they work great. They feel so odd compared to stock, and feel considerably different from modern power disks, but I’ll get used to it. I can’t argue with their performance. Safety first. |

Thank you for the reports Zozo. Your report and a recent sale price tipped the scale and i now have a AC Industries disc brake kit for my 65 in the garage.
Now the hunt for the same for my 60 w/ stock 15" rims. EMPI "quality" or German (CSP) price. As far as i can tell these are the only two options for stock 15" crows feet rims. |

I installed my second AC set and had a minor problem I thought I'd tell you about. The rear check valve was stuck closed, not allowing the rear brakes to bleed. I removed the line and check valve (left valve in the picture), bled it at the MC port with my finger, and put the check valve back in. I then bled it at the valve with my finger, then connected the line. It bled easily at the rear wheels from there. No biggie, 10 minutes max.

I didn't see a listing for 63 and earlier disc brakes from AC. Is there not one available for the early spindles?
