Bought this fuel tank float sending unit from WW:

Unit itself is fine, but the included gasket is a piece of crap! Stink was so bad, I put the old dead unit back in along with its gasket. Meanwhile, I bought a good gasket set from VW NOS:

Botton line: All's well now, thanks to Marcel Heimlich of VWNOS
PS - An edit, added to admit stink may be partly my fault:
The 1965 chasis (that I bought in 1975) came with cut-off stock (non-electrical) fuel tank float level indicator cable. I replaced that sender with an electrical float sender purchased new from a VW dealership in 1976. Then, 49 years and ~400,000 miles later, the sender was failing. Before removing it, I used ATF (automatic transmission fluid) to loosen up its 5 mounting screws. The ATF spread widely, so may have been a factor allowing fuel vapor to escape past new WW unit's included gasket. Another factor, I was still using the original somewhat crack'd stock screw gaskets:
Success came after I used acetone to carefully clean the tank area all around where sender attaches. Next, I applied a thin coat of what @Cusser calls "brown goo" (Permatex Gasket Shellac Compound, formerly known as Indian Head shellac, thanks to @runamoc for that idea). Then, install'd the new parts:
Stock ground work'd pretty well until near the end of the '76 sender's 49yr life, when it became iffy and meter never show'd totally full anymore. So I gave the WW sender its own dedicated ground wire, with brown goo all around its hook terminal end connector:
BTW: Although WW claims to make their float sender themselves, it came with a sticker saying "Made in Taiwan" !! |
