yes, vw/karmann built a concept prototype cabrio as well as a notchback version. 'dream' types as it says on the pillar

Note the silver one with fuel flap in the rear!
Thinking about type 4 also note the monocoque body, Mc Pherson struts and IRS rear axle. VW, Norhoff wanted nearly all make competly new. Body, engine, trans, front end, steering, rear axle, seats and so on.

At home, spring 1975. I'm standing next to mom's '74 412 on which I was learning to drive after getting my NY learner's permit. Car had VWoA "Autobahn" mag-style wheel covers. Dad's '74 412 is at left, which was his company car at VW of America headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. The silver '72 was mom's which we sold shortly after.
