Since my retirement I have been thinking a lot about our mortality. And with the changing landscape of angry nations and sultry politics, it does not make it any easier to imagine the next few decades.
I am concerned with which one of the two of us will go first and what that will do to the other. We have no kids. I am generally not a very happy person, have become a homebody and been chasing something to make me happy for a few years. But I don't want my wife to have to figure out what to do with all these cars, tools and other belongings we have collected these many years.
My folks down sized and shortly after my dad got sick and passed. My mom was always depressed as she lived another 10 years (to age 86) by herself mostly reading books. The kids would call regularly and go see her when we could but I am not sure if it was enough to lift her spirits after dad was gone.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your journey. And good on you for getting out and about. Keep it up. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Man thats tough. I am also childless and will have to start thinning down everything BUT the vehicles. It sucks having to start thinking/worrying about all of this mortality crap! My Mom lost her 1st husband a 27 yo Marine when he had a heart attack at 27yo. She already had my 3yo Sister and my Brother was still in the womb. Then she met my Dad at 32yo and had me a year later. We lost my Dad in 2005 and my Mom made it until 2017. I dont know how she managed to deal with this kind of loss twice other than she was a strong stubborn Italian American woman!!! _________________ July 1959 Mango Standard Bus aka Obus https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256592&highlight=

These can be the hardest days. I cope by thinking of her, and reminding myself of all she gave me, and renew my promise to live my life as she taught me. It doesn't make it easier, but it gives me purpose for the day. _________________ Current Fleet:

My brother-in-law was despondent after his wife, my sister, passed away. He was truly lost.
Nothing we could say or do for him or help him seem to make any difference in his overall attitude. He was truly waiting to die so we could be with his wife of almost 50 years. I finally said to him: “….you are here for a reason. God had a darn good purpose in you around. Can I help you find that purpose?”
He never did find the purpose. But he told me many times he was looking for it.
Shortly thereafter he was diagnosed with bone cancer. He was soon gone. And I hope he found his happiness and purpose. _________________ Larry in OB

I hope this soothes Obus. That day was, is, and will forever be her birthday. I like to celebrate my loved ones who are departed on their birthday, which is the beginning of their time, and don’t even note their passing day. When you have lived the good life , your time is endless in the lives you influenced.
Sorry to go a bit Zen with a trace of Kubler Ross
Thanks for sharing her life. _________________ 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🍊 🍊 🍊 |
