With the sad passing of actor Kris Kristofferson on Sept. 28, 2024 I found this movie in which he is at/near some VWs. The yellow '72 Karmann Beetle Cabrio is driven by actress Susan Anspach, and they meet actor George Segal at a rooftop parking lot. There are 2 Karmann Ghia Coupes on the lot. This segment is filmed in Los Angeles, California.

Karmann Ghia Cabrio parked at far right, possibly a '67, movie "The laughing policeman" (1973).

Movie "Move over, darling" (1963) starring James Garner and Doris Day who are driving the blue Chrysler convertible into the dealer behind the Ghia. Bonus Porsche 356 Cabrio in the showroom.

rcooled has a photo in this thread (Aug. 2023) of 3 Ghias in this same movie, driving out the back of the dealer moments later.

Three different Ghias, all appearing within minutes of each other, in the 1960 film 'Midnight Lace', starring Doris Day.

Kind of funny when you consider the low production numbers that three would be seen like that.

Don't ever remember seeing more than one pass by in such close order...even here in CA.

Never knew of Ghias 'till I was a junior in HS back in the NY Metro area and a friend talked his dad into buying the only one in town. Beetles were fairly common (VWoA was founded in Englewood Cliffs, NJ) but Ghias were quite rare.

My father worked there from '67 thru early '80!

In what town did you live in the NY metro area?

I lived near Paterson, NJ...about 20 miles from NYC.

Was surprised when my wife mentioned she saw a Karmann Ghia convertible on a recent Korean TV series (“The Trunk”) on Netflix. Nice looking car with some custom touches. I’m guessing ‘67-’69.

^ Ghia has some anomalies: Inner-grip style door handles (as of '68 model year), no rear side reflectors ('67 only), 4-bolt rims ('67 +), door-mounted driver's mirror ('66 +), correctly shaped rear window ('67 - '69 1/2). But no fuel filler flap ('68+), white steering wheel (thru '65), no "safety" inner mirror (rectangular shape w alu housing thru '66, then black plastic safety housing as of '67). Mirror shape with rounded sides looks more like a Beetle. Passenger door mirror is thru '65 style but was never mounted on the door from factory. Could be an earlier body mounted on a '67+ chassis.

From the 1977 movie "Mr. Billion- fortune and trouble in the west". Main character played by Terence Hill is wearing the red shirt at the right rear of the cable car.

Once again it's Mr. Hill on the bike.

Composite shot of a dark-colored Ghia Coupe parked, movie "Serenade for two spies" (1965) filmed in San Francisco, CA. There is no VOLKSWAGEN emblem to the left of the license plate, and the taillamp appears to be the "banana" shape from '60; making it a '60 thru '62.

White Ghia Coupe parked at left, German movie "Charley's Onkel" (1969). The small white convertible behind the dark Beetle is a mid- '60's NSU Spider with the Wankel rotary engine. Cool

Despite the black & white movie, likely a black Ghia Coupe on the street- parked, then driving off. German movie "Der Jugendrichter" (the youth judge), 1960.

In the 1977 film Oh God, Jerry Landers (John Denver) is driving his AMC Pacer as a yellow Ghia coupe passes by going in the opposite direction.

Composite of green '70/'71 Ghia Coupe in background behind main character Red Mendoza (Cheech Marin), "Cheech and Chong's next movie" (1980). He's driving his yellow '56 Ford Thunderbird.

From the same movie, a dark green late Ghia Coupe parked, near center of the photo. Bonus is Bob Smith VW dealer on the left. TheSamba dealer listings show this likely to be their Hollywood location on 1750 North Cahuenga Blvd in Hollywood, California; though looking at GoogleMaps at that location does not show the large hill in background. This might've been a separate service department location nearby.

And from an earlier movie also starring Cheech Marin, a mural with a yellow Ghia Cabrio lowrider on background wall, movie "Born in East L.A." (1979).

I was watching "Rush Hour" again this weekend and there is a dark green fat vert fat chick for about 3 or 4 seconds in the first 10 minutes of the movie.

I just loaded a photo of this Ghia into my gallery:

And another Ghia, this time a Coupe, from the same movie (1998)-

Hard to tell the exact year of the Coupe. I don't see headrests so it'd be thru '67. It has a light-colored inner mirror, door-mounted outer mirror, and "flat" front hubcap (in contrast to a domed one thru '65 which would be seen at this angle); so either a '66 or '67.
