PostPosted: Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:31 am    Post subject: Fresh Air Hose Connection Question Reply with quote

I have standard large hose clamps on my fresh air hoses where they connect to the sleeves as they pass through the engine tin down to the heater boxes. I also have the rubber grommets on the hoses to protect them from the engine tin. I don't have hose clamps on the connection to the fan shroud. They seem to stay in place without them.

Did the original 1500 have the clamps on both ends of the fresh air hose and were they the standard American worm gear clamps or were they a 'single bolt' style clamp?

Thanks,

Doug

Factory manuals show the clamps on both ends of the fresh air hose. Don't know what the original clamps looked like. I know you are asking for 'correctness' as opposed to functionality because the worm drive clamps work just fine. If there is a 'German' clamp out there for these, someone else here will know...

I know I like the German fuel line clamps which are a 'single bolt' style clamp as opposed to the 'worm' drive clamps.

I'm not sure about the 1500 but does this help?

That's it Everett! Now, if we could only zoom in to see if that is a bolt or a worm drive screw...

The first picture does not look like a worm drive to me

Here's a photo from my '63 owners manual.

It is definitely a 'single bolt style clamp'.

Thanks Scott and Everett,

You guys nailed it! Now to find them...

dstefun,

Those clamps aren't for the fresh air hose but for the heater box/hose connections under the bus.

Yes, those are the clamps for the heater box to upper heat exchangers.

I don't think the rubber "protects" the hoses as you said, it just seals the tin opening from air leakage

The clamps are stamped with "VW" and are phillips heads.

Crofty,

Were those clamps the same ones used on the Bay Windows?

The OG '69 Beetles and Bays I worked on in the early '70's had 'em.

I've just seen a couple of OG clamps and they have '60' and the word 'Gemy' on them.

Scott,

Just saw your want ad in the classifieds. You're needing some of these too? Did you find out if they have VW on them or not?

Doug,

Your thread got me thinking anal and I decided to replace my 'worm drive' American fresh air hose clamps with OG ones. I did this already on all my fuel lines, so I thought I would make it unanimous.

I have someone who has a couple of clamps but Crofty believes that the OG ones have VW stamped on them and he is checking that out. Lind is also checking his '66 Deluxe for the markings...

HEEEEEERE they are. These are the OG Gemy clamps I have. There is one 40mm & two 45mm that are maked with their size & a vw stamp that is very hard to get a picture of. The other two are 60mm & have no vw stamp, only The Gemy mark & their size, unless the stamp is there & you just can't see it. I don't think there is though.

Thanks James,

The photos are great. Haven't heard anything yet about the VW stamping. Is it possible that the logo on the clamps is Gemi as opposed to Gemy? Is the line at the end of the word making it look like a 'Y'?

The reason I ask is I contacted the company that owns Gemi clamps which is in Germany and asked them if they supplied VW with clamps in the 60's and 70's and she didn't have any luck with their history. They did have some photos on their website of clamps that looked a lot like the ones you have posted here.

James,

I believe it is Gemi. They got fancy when they joined the end of the 'i' and the bottom of the 'G'.

The jury's still out ... and you're up late tonight in Philly...

Til' tomorrow.
