I am having an issue finding this tranny mount, likely I am just stupid and am missing it, but I have tried a couple places and am not sure what to get to replace this.
Any help would be great.

What confused me was the original was "square" where the new one I have is "oval". It made me think I had ordered the wrong thing. Why did the design of the mount change?

Nothing changed. There’s two sides to the mount, the chassis side, and transmission side. The oval piece you speak of is the chassis mount, it had broken off over time, and what you were left with is the square transmission mount. The two pieces are molded together by rubber, so they can flex independently.
Also, if you haven’t already, you will need to get a transmission mount bushing, #8 in the diagram below.

Yes I have that as well. Just odd how it broke the "ears" off.
Thanks for your help. |

It's not odd at all, in fact that's the most common mode of failure for the front transaxle mount. The rubber "square" bolted to the transaxle nose cone is bonded to the metal plate which is bolted to the chassis. Over time the rubber tends to either tear or disbond from the metal and eventually ends up separating into two pieces as yours has done. It's useful to know that the bolts attaching the mount to the nose cone do not attach to the metal plate -- the only thing holding the mount together is the bond between the rubber and metal. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Learn something new, I have had this old girl for a very long time, it is an on again off again project. Hopefully this time I will get it finished.
I understand how to screw cars together, this is not my first rodeo, but I am new to VW. I did not know this was a common failure.
Thanks for the tips, I am sure I will have many more....well duh.....questions to come. |
