looks like they've just taken the tri-mil "euro two-tip" style muffler, turned it 90 degrees upward and welded on larger bore double bend outlets.
According to VWTrends,

"Tri-Mil Eurosport Single-Tip
rpm lbs. hp torque
2500 17.2 43 90.33
3000 16.6 48.9 87.18
3500 15.6 54.6 81.93
4000 15 60 78.78
4500 13.6 61.2 71.42
5000 11.2 56 58.82

We got between four and five horsepower from 4000rpm to our redline of 5000. A quick plug check showed that with the free-flowing exhaust the engine was running lean. The 117 main jet was changed to a 125. "

Then they re-jetted.

"Tri-Mil Eurosport single-Tip (re-Jet)
rpm lbs. hp torque
2500 17.2 43 90.33
3000 16.8 50.4 88.23
3500 16.4 57.4 86.13
4000 15.2 60.8 79.83
4500 13.8 62.1 72.47
5000 11.8 59 61.97

A simple three-dollar jet change netted us a solid three extra ponies at 5000rpm. Another plug check told us the engine was happier with the fatter main jet. With the rest of the free-flowing exhausts yet to come, we left it right where it was. "

So, it looks like it may provide some benefit over the stock system on stock size engines, and the price is pretty decent.

So I am guessing for us 1973 Thing owners we would then need J Tubes to complete the setup? My exhaust is rusty and really protrudes from the bottom back of the bumper. I wonder if this new design shows a big muffler below the bumber or not. I was thinking about buying the $400 like stock setup from a Thing store in SoCal but maybe this new setup would work.

due to technical complications, global warming and the Michael Jackson acquittal, the thing muffler system previously named " WILD BOAR " has been updated, and now should be referenced as the " New Thing Muffler " or " Tri Mil Euro 2 tip thing Muffler "

thank you for your time

Scott, didn't the Thing Shop have those for a while?

My muffler needs replacing, but I'm definitely not going with another dual-muffler setup. Too much of a pain in the ass when adjusting valves. Sad

well, maybe 10 years ago. the one in the photo is pretty rare, an original 74 thing muffler. they have been unavailable for a good long while. the repro 74 muffler is available now for a good price. i haven't seen one in person as yet but it looks decent in a photo.

So I am kinda new to the Thing muffler options but is there any issue of a 73 owner like me to switch to a 74 style muffler if I ever have to as long as I get these J Tube deals or is there a cheap two muffler setup that allows easier access for valve adjustments so I can stay somewhat stock?

The repros were what I meant. Wink

Doesn't look like either the Thing Shop or Things Unlimited have any, though. Sad Things Unlimited claims the dual exhaust system boosts horsepower by 25 HP! I find that a little hard to swallow...

GMW has the '73, and I believe The Thing Shop has them if you ask- they just don't put it in the catalog for some reason.

Here's that Things Unlimited 1973-style dual muffler. (Actually the S&S brand one):

I may go with that after all. I don't want anything more restrictive than the muffler I just took off, and it wouldn't kill me to loosen a couple of bolts to get the muffler out of the way for valve jobs.

Indecisive much? No, well, not... yes. Embarassed

I think that is the rusted muffler I have on my Thing now. The bottom section hangs way below the bumber and I do not like it. Unless this model hides the tubes better than mine. On mine, it is way below the bumber and that bugs me. Here is what mine looks like. Yuck!

Can you take another picture from a lower angle? Now that I think about it, I wonder if the muffler would block the crankshaft nut...

Wow, that's almost too close to call. If you look straight through the hole in the bumper, do you see engine tin or exhaust pipe?

Sorry to keep making you run out to the garage. Smile

I do not see muffler pipe through the hole so should be OK for crank start, at least on my setup.
