Taking the rear bumper off gives a little more work room (4 bolts out and 4 nuts&bolts loosened). Remove rear tin first.
I've never taken out a bug engine, but it was pretty easy in my two Things. Of course, it is easier to destroy than to create...

The fasteners I was describing were for the bumper.
The engine has the same 4 bolts as on a bug engine - 2 top, 2 bottom. When I did it, I just followed the Idiot book and the Bug Me video.

PS - 73's are even easier since there are no heater boxes. _________________ Whut is that-there Thang!?

As I remember, disconnect electrical, accelerator cable, fuel line, heater box control cables (if there), undo 4 bolts, and drop the sucker.
No mounts - just bolts. The tranny has rubber or urethane mounts to attach it to the frame fork. The engine simply bolts to the tranny and kind of hangs there suspended in space.

so here's the scoop...got engine and tranny out....what happened was the tranny and engine were both pushed back about 3 inches from where they should be....how could this happen?...when i got tranny out the rod that connects under the rear seat was just flopping around...i do happen to have an extra tranny...how to tell if it's good?...the rod that comes out the cone end is stable and clicks when i turn it back and forth...the lever on the side slides the inners back aND FORTH... anything else to check?...still curious how the tranny and engine were pushed so far back....thanks everyone!! |
